The patient tells you that he underwent a colonoscopy 3 years ago. Two hyperplastic polyps were found in the rectum. He also had scattered diverticula in the sigmoid. Based on this new information, which strategy do you recommend?

A) Colonoscopy now. B) Colonoscopy in 2 years. C) Yearly tests for fecal occult blood. D) Yearly tests for fecal occult blood and colonoscopy in 7 years. D) E) Colonoscopy in 7 years

Feedback: Hyperplastic polyps are commonly found in the colon and have a predilection for the distal rectum. Unlike adenomas, typical hyperplastic polyps are changes that do not substantially raise the risk for colorectal cancer. Therefore, polypectomy or surveillance examinations are not necessary. Colonoscopy is the test with the highest sensitivity and specificity for the detection of neoplastic or other changes in the colon. Current guidelines for colorectal cancer screening include a full colonoscopy every 10 years as one potential option. Individuals who have no pathologic findings on colonoscopy should not be tested for fecal occult blood for screening within the following 10 years, considering the much lower sensitivity and specificity of stool tests compared to colonoscopy

Kap says "If polyps have been found on a previous colonoscopy, then a repeat colonoscopy should be done in 3 to 5 years."

It just says polyps, and doesn't specify what type.

I forgot what type of polyp the UW question said, but I remember that answer was 3-5 years as well.
