Hi
Is it better to apply with step 1 and cs score on sept 1st or to apply after ecfmg certification by sept end.Will I be at a great loss if I chose to apply later in september.Will the programs start reviewing applications and send invitations in september itself?
Someone pls help me with this

I applied first week of sept with step 1 and step 2 ck scores...my applications got uploaded by programs within another 2 weeks...I got emails from 2 programs saying they have received my application but will review it only when it is complete (that is when I will be ecfmg cert)..i did get 3 calls though...then i got ecfmg cert on oct 10yh, i wrote to every program i had applied (including those who had already sent me IVs) regarding the update (though eras updates by itself) and this was followed by 13 more IVs....
While i do think applying end of sept shouldnt change ur chances too much...if i was in ur position i would apply early and update my application when step 2 ck scores came in...for 2 reasons--
firstly ur application gets there on time, there is much more to ur application than ECFMG cert....(if ECFMG certification is an eligibility criteria for any program u could apply there after ur results, but for the rest u should get there on time)
Secondly u get reason to communicate with ur programs and update them

gajvaktra (nice name!)...ur welcome...i got 16 IVs 3 before and 13 after ECFMG certification, that the point I was making that u do get IVs b4 certifcation but more after that...i matched peds

Hi mukho,I also have to apply with two scores,CS and step-1 in first wk of sept.08.My question is can i apply to programs who need ecfmg cert.? and when i get ecfmg cert.(that would be in first wk of october) i will update my info with every program i applied.I am an FMG.As u know most of programs eligibility for us is ecfmg cert.Please reply me soon.

I had already taken my last exam required for certification, so I applied to all programs (even those that needed ECFMG certification).... most of these replied (IV or rejection) only after my application got updated with my ECFMG certification,.... and 2 prog wrote back to me saying ur application is incomplete and will be reviewed when u are ecfmg certified...none said they would reject my application...most just wait till ur certification i guess...so i dont see any harm in applying
Best would be to get an ans from the programs itself and clarify...though they tend to send back generic email for everyone!

Thanks Mukho for your reply.Please tell me how many programs we need to apply to get enough response.In my case i want apply for FM,IM(mostly FM).How many programs did u apply?and in which field.Also pls tell me how fast we get ecfmg cert. and upload info on ERAS when we get result of last exam on OASIS?Please reply me soon.

I applied for 50 prog (all peds)...i got my certificate within 2 days of the results of score report of the last exam required for certification...they uploaded it by 24 hrs on ERAS
Regarding how many program have to be applied to I dont really know...but this is what i did....maybe it will help....peds had about 206 prog, and i didnt have any geographical preference....so i selected the programs based on if i qualified for their eligibility criteria (like many dont take old grad, need hands on clinical experience)...
then with that list i made a list of those that I wanted to apply in ...like university programs with good training...
then i made of list of prog where my chance of getting in would be higher...
lastly i removed the programs where i would NOT go for one or the other reason...
then i applied in as many from this list as my bank account permitted...which was 50...
no idea bout IM/FM though

Thanks Mukho for reply,I also want to know,did you use online paid sites(like mach a resident) for applying to residency?OR just called directly to programs listed on FREIDA.What were ur scores in usmle,any attempts,yr grad.etc?Pls reply me soon.

Sorry dear, I dont remember this...but that info is usually there on the program website...i do have the eligibility criteria lists stored somewhere on my computer but firstly it is a very untidy document and secondly criteria may change from yr to yr so u would have to find out anyways....if u really think u would be helped, PM me ur email id and i'll send it along...
