I need to know what you guys think is the right answer, b/c i thought I answered it right but it was marked wrong. A 2-year-old boy presents with repeated viral and fungal infections and tetany. Workup reveals hypocalcemia and a marked impairment of cell-mediated immunity resulting from an absence of T cells. Because of these signs and symptoms, the diagnosis of DiGeorge’s syndrome is made. Considering this diagnosis, the absence of T cells is a direct consequence of failure of which embryonic structure to develop? A. Third pharyngeal pouch B. Fourth pharyngeal pouch C. Fifth pharyngeal pouch D. Ultimobranchial body E. Foramen cecum

The answer is A in my opinion as well, but in FA, it says the fourth pouch gives rise to the parathyroid glands, which result in hypocalcemia, and digeorge is due to incomplete development of both 3rd and 4th pouches, the answers should have had both of these as a choice, or either one, not both as seperate.

I think ans is A . Bcoz thymus develops frm 3rd pp n they ve specifically asked fr d origin of defect of T cells. I too chose A but it says ans is B.

Rubeness i agree with you and and madhu, but i still dont understand if they are asking for a direct consequence of t cell absence, that has to be 3rd pharyngeal pouch since it gives rise to thymus.....weird question

The third pouch contributes for thymus and Inferior parathyroid glands. Whereas the fourth pouch contributes for the superior parathyroid glands. And Digeorge Syndrome is due to Lack of development of the above strucures from both 3rd and 4th pouches. Out of the choices given, A is the best answer because it involves both immune deficiency and Hupoparathyroidism.
