From first post:

1. Staphylococcus aureus is about 1 micrometer in size.

2. Normal gut flora:
- normal bacteria are attached to intestinal wall and thus prevent (to some extent) attachment of pathogenic bacteria
- some normal bacteria contain lactase and can thus digest some lactose, what can be of help in lactose intolerant people (with the lack of lactase)
- bacteria chemically change bile acids so they can be re-absorbed when they reach the distal small intestine;
- break down fibers, lactose and other carbohydrates into short chain fatty acids, which are absorbed in the colon, enhancing colonic water absorption;
- synthesize some vitamin K and vitamin B12.
