Hi,

My scores are step 1/89(1st attempt), step 2 ck/75 (third attempt), CS passed (1st att). I have US masters and GRA research experience. I am planning to get 3 US LORS in the next couple of months. Now that I have very weak step 2, I am planning to offset the negative impression by scoring well on step 3 by this august. Do you think it helps? Also I do not need a visa as I will be getting my green card soon.
BTW, I just crossed the 5 yr mark from my graduation. I have good communication skills and a good personal statement explaining the reason for the multiple attempts.
I am on the verge of losing hope because of the attempts. I hate being a home maker or a work in some other field. Please let me know your honest opinion on my case and advise to improve my chances. Thanks in advance.

hello hooked....
I totally think that you can make it into residency. But most likely you will not get derm, ophtalm, or any surgical specialty. I can tell you that attempts are not death sentence. I have met people with attempts that are IMG and matched. GC holders? much more chance. You need to get a good score in step 3 though, and as far as I am concerned I would go for something were there are many options to match.
What is your opinion about IM? FP? peds or path?
if you are planning for dermatology, I would have a backup plan.

Anamgarcia,
Thanks. I prefer IM and have FM and Peds as back up. I am desperate to know which programs your friends/acquaintances or anybody with attempts could get into. This info is extremely helpful to me to direct my efforts to. Please let me know.

Dear friends,

PLEASE let me know if any of your friends etc had attempts on steps and were able to successfully get into residency and also the PROGRAMS that they were able to get into. This will be tremendous help to an on-the-verge-of-depression doc!! Thanks in advance.

there are lots of 'success' stotirs out there of people in the same boat as you so DO NOT DESPAIR. my advice is that you apply to over 70 programs in order for you to get a good return. take care to apply to centers that have no fixed policy on number of attempts. get on the phone and talk to the program coordinators. start NOW. this is the best time becaue they are not under pressure from candidates. i cannot tell you where the people i heard of matched but i can confirm that i have heard enough to know that your scores are not the only factor. good luck

Thanks Tolito. I like your advise to call the PDs right now. Will do that. Thanks again for the encouragement.

umm...my 2 cents, if u have low step 2 ck score, & don't need a visa then don't take step 3 it's only helful in getting H1...b/c god forbid but if u fail in step 3 then the programs won't take u...so if i were in ur place i'd add externship(1st choice ) or research(2nd choice) into my resume, instead of trying for step 3 & not being confirmed about it anyways + it's better to takeit after intern year as most of it is what u do in intern year....it's just my advice, rest is your own decision!!

best of luck, God help those who help themeselevs...only don't lose hopeZ!!!
