Someone please explain how and why monocytosis occurs in SLE?

I think its a bone marrow response or a relative increase in numbers as there is neutropenia occuring in SLE. The peripheral monocytes come into circulation as the immature neutropils mature.

Thanks. Becos I was thinking that if antibodies are attacking WBC, RBC, and platelets then why would monocytes increase. Why are they so special?

I have an idea...but it has to do more with the effect of steroids and not the Lupus itself..

if we talk about a pt who gets steroids, e.g for a disease flare, the monocytes can be increased, since steroids decrease the percentage of the marginal population of monocytes( the ones that move in close contact to the vessel wall, ready to transverse it) and so, increase the percentage of circulating ones.

Well in cases of SLE where the monocytosis is occuring the patient is said to have lesser chances of having an infection with the neutropenia. The antigen which are being developed against neutropenia have somehow left the 'Peripheral monocytes alone.

I was reading an interesting article last noght while searching on it. Will post it here once i find it again.
