Hi, I typed my personal statement on MSword and it came to 1.5 pages. the font used was Times New Roman, regular, size 12. is it possible to adjust the font while typing it on eras. or can i type it in a smaller(size 9 font) so as to restrict it to one page and copy-paste it in eras? how much of a problem is it if PS exceeds one page? is it necessary to leave space between each line of the document? thanks

No matter what size/style of the font you use, the MyERAS system counts only letters... The text is absolutely plain, you cannot highlight, bold, italicize, underline, etc... Nobody knows how your PS will appear on PD's screen... Try to be less wordy... 1.5 pages is too big but still within the allowed limit...

Hey, try to be yourself and never, never copy somebody's style or use on-line help while creating PS... Look down the posts here, and you will see a post by BBB (to the best of my memory) indicating that PD's have their own on-line service (or something like that, I don't remember the details) allowing to clarify if PS was written with any service help... If they know that your PS isn't a product of your heartful thoughts and was drafted by paid agency, they have all rights to report you to NRMP to intervene with your match process... The only help you can safely afford is checking for typos and other grammars... GL

I just remembered I used this website for grammar check... These people are supposed to be pros, and the fares are relatively cheap and the service is fast and accurate... www.papercheck.com GL

I had a typo on my PS and one of the docs that interviewd me notice it and told me: "This is better than having a "perfect" PS cuz I know you did it yourself and I really like what you try to express on it".....this program offered me a prematch. At the end I took another prematch which was more suitable for me...but as you see you will never know how the PD and the other interviewers are going to see you.... Im not saying that make mistakes on your PS on purpouse but if after you certified your documents you find out an error, do not sweet it to much!!!! bye

Aside from checking for typos (which most word processors can do), I found it very helpful to send it to a couple of trusted, selected persons for feedback. Having it checked by a NATIVE English speaker (who does not have to be a physician) was also a big help. I used some general guidelines from Iserson's, First Aid for the Match and the Kaplan Forum. I started mine with a quote, which sort of reflected the general tone of the statement. Some PDs had a favorable opinion of this. I don't really know how big a factor my PS was in my application, but I would say that it does not hurt to spend time and effort in it. It is not an essay you should write in 2 or 3 days. It took me a good 2-3 weeks to finish it. As for the typos, even after checking it thoroughly I even found one afterwards. Don't think it matters too much, if it's only 1 or 2. GL

I recommend showing your PS to as many people as you can. A fresh look from your friends and colleagues may spot things you would never thought of.
