Coombs serum is used in Blood Banking. I haven't done BB since 1988. Here's a link to information about a Direct Coombs test: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/0... Indirect Coombs testing is the same as the "screen" part of a "type and screen" order for BB. Here's a link: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/0... http://www.gpnotebook.co.uk/cache/1771700246.htm Here's another link.

Coombs serum is "anti-human gamma globulin". They make it by immunizing a horse or another animal with human gamma globulin. Then the horse makes anti-human gamma globulin. This coombs serum put in a human and can be used to detect autoantibodies against human RBC's in Hemolytic Anemia. (the anti-human gamma globulin will bind the autoantibodies on the patient's RBCs) This can be seen by clumping of the blood.
