Hi guys I need your advice. I am currently in the US holding a B1/B2. I was given 6 months at my POE and I plan to maximize my stay here. I arrived January 23 and was stamped until July 22. Will it be difficult for me to go back to the states if I maximize the 6 months given to me? How soon can I visit again if I leave the US? I plan to go back in december to attend interviews if I get invited. Thank you.

if u mean by "maximise my stay" that u intend to stay till the last day allowed on ur visa then there is no problem ...My visa was till Jan 18 and I left US on Jan 17th night...just dont overstay U can revisit again depending on ur entry visa type, if u got a multiple entry then u can enter whenever u want i guess, if its a single entry then u go thru the whole visa process again and then go back...time limit is only for the time taken for the process ...no rule like J1 2yrs for B1/B2

Hi, mukho. How are ya? Is there a maximum number of days you can spend on US soil in a given 12-month period? Thanks.

Am good..growing older while i wait for my visa ...hows ur prep coming on? I am no authority, but i have friends who spent 6 mnths in US came back for 2 mnths and then again went...so I think on a B1/b2 there is a limit to max number of consecutive days u stay in US..usually 6 mnths, and with a extension also usually upto 8mnths but not as separate visits....however, I get nervous giving too many visa opinions as u never know what intricacy one missed!

Hi mukho, how r u? Yeah I have multiple entry visa. Hi paheli, did you get an answer to your question aside from mukho's advice? I am really worried about this issue about how often one can enter the US in a given year.

Thanks, mukho, for your reply. I know you can't commit on the details of this visa issue. I think everybody here understands that. Oh, and it's torture to watch the sloooowww wheels of bureaucracy turn, huh. Enjoy this time, though, while it lasts! harry, all the my relatives who visit the US strangely return exactly 6 mo after they landed on US soil. So, I asked about it and they said that 6 mo / yr is the max you're allowed to stay. They did not know of the ways of extending their stay, coz they never had the need to do so. I'll keep you informed if I hear of anything, and you do the same for me too. Btw, 'Multiple-entry' means you can enter any number of times, but totally you cannot overstay your limit [which is what I'm trying to find out]

Hi paheli, my friend said that if one maximized his 6 months of stay and needs to come back in the US within that given year, the officer at the POE will give him a hard time. There was an incidence where a visitor was interrogated by not just one but 5 officers in the POE, luggage inspected, etc. But he was able to enter US. But going through that process is traumatic! I don't know if this is true or just another story to scare us.

Harry, yeah, I heard that too. But, I also know that many people do stay longer than 6 months on B1/B2. Typically, residency aspirants spend ~ 8 mo at a stretch, which includes CS, Step 3, USCE and IVs. I wish I knew how they do it.

they do it by getting an extension...the maximum time u get ay US port of entry is 6 mnths, then if u have a good reason to stay on like say a very important interview or an observership u apply for an extension.... chek the link minag posted....that is how u stay for more than 6 mnths...it is perfectly legal...however what seniors adviced me was that in case for any reason ur extension appeal gets rejected and u come bak then returning to US becomes a problem...i however met a guy from nepal who was in his 7th mnth in US and he said he never had any hassles.... If u spend the full 6 mnths in states and then come back to ur home country, ur ques was how soon can u go back on a multiple entry....well again i wrote to my seniors whose parents visit them extensively and what they said was, their isnt any "rule" or mandatory gap between 2 visits, its just that if u return immediately u wiil get asked on the POE questions like---why are u bak so early? and if ur reason requires u to spend about less than a mnth on the second visit then why didnt u ask for an extension? So if u have a good reason to be bak it should be ok...like a friend of mine who spent 6 mnths ending feb 2008 and didnt match is going back for (hopefully) another 6 mnths this july so if u want to stay on beyond ur 6 mnths...and u are ready to take the risk of rejection u apply for a extension (with reasons) o/w u come bak and then go again ready to ans why ur bak at POE Some seniors are still to reply so i'll update if i find anything else...
