You're on the right track. Will your research yield a publication (or two)? Who is going to write you LORs? Is there anyone who is going to call PDs on your behalf (UAB faculty)? You state that your spouse is a UAB employee - is he/she an employee, or a member of faculty/attending physician? I do not know if the employee per se (let's say research technician, administrative assistant...) will make any difference when the committee will be selecting applicants for the interview (I doubt it, unless it is someone deeply involved with the program), but it can help you on the interview if you state that he/she works here and that you'd like to stay in the area (after stating all the praises for the program and elaborating why you want to do it at UAB).
Good luck!

As I found out from talking to people involved in selecting residents, it is very important to have somebody who is willing to lobby on your behalf. Even better so if that person is from the dept and has a tenured position (any kind of professor). But, don't put all your eggs in one basket, apply for decent residency positions in the local hospitals as well. I'm sure there are a few in Birmingham.
As for the publication, it doesn't have to be in IM, or in clinical medicine at all, but would be nice if it were in something related - like experimental cardiology or sth like that.

Yeah... i am trying to do as much work in the system as i can...and yes, as u said i will be applying to colleges all over.. i was just curious to know if any imgs like me have matched here before..
u have been really helpful.. i was in a dilemna over a certain project , i guess i am gonna take it up now...!! my publication would be in surgery but with a strong overlap in critical care medicine so i guess it should be okay.. smiling face
