6-7 hours

5-8 hours

Well, depends on the day....but on average 10 hrs. 8)
I don't think that the number matter....only what you do when your are studying.

I think that this Q should be splitted in two parts: for those that have an job beside their study, for those who not.. how about it?
Could be more relevant?

i don't have a job,but unfortunately i spend about 3-4 hours a day,3-4 days a week...if that the weeks that i do touch the books.Better start getting serious huh?

  #9

Well not so.....its not the question of how much studies you do.....but its more about how much of quality studying you do.I had a friend who would only touch his book 3-4 times a week and that too couldn't sit still during that time yet he scored well....so don't be disheartened DiaHuq....study what you can....because even if you forced yourself to sit through....it won't be helpful on the day you give the exam when you're all anxious. So study at your own pace but give it the best during that time.

  #10

These are all very interesting answers, but I'm wondering for how long everyone is studying for? Weeks or months?
I'm a full time student and put in about 3-4 hours/day now but plan to increase that to about 10 hours/day for about 6 weeks before taking
USMLE Step 1. What about everyone else? For how many weeks/months are you studying the hours you said?

  #11

Good q sidney. I have been studying for about 4 months. Naturally, 10hrs is ideal and I find that some days I study 3hrs and others I study 10hrs. Honestly, the best advice I have gotten is not to worry about how many hours I study. Rather what I get done during my study. Obviously, it is best to get through as much material as possible before the exam....cover all your bases. However, you need to understand the concepts more so than remember them. That is what step 1 is testing....not "rat facts". Do you understand why.

Hey Quinn. Yes, I know most of the questions are integrative, case-based questions that require not just knowing facts but also interdisciplinary reasoning and figuring. I'm just curious about what kind of time others are putting into studying on a daily basis and for how long. I'm studying medicine in Australia where the curriculum doesn't cater to students taking the USMLE, and so, I have to rely on my own study habits to get through material that our course dosen't touch. Sort of double studying! I'm planning on taking Step 1 at the end of Jan. 2005. What about you?

max 8 hours.

  #15

Thanks Malaysian to your encouraging message. I studied 5-6 hours a day and only 3x a week because I had kids to attend with. I somewhat frustrated so this passed few days I cannot concentrate on my studies. I sometimes cried and want to go back to our country. But I alreadly spend a lot with this exam. I already passed my application form and enrolled in Webprep in Kaplan. Right now I cannot absorb what I am reading I am reading behavioral science but still I cannot answer the questions there. Maybe I am to depressed so I cannot concentrate well. :|

stay cool .i am george and i am an img too.i want to enroll on webprep at kaplan 's too. i know its very hard but dont give up.never give up.try to find ways to keep yourself in a good condition .relax for 2 days ......take the time to think ............then come back at your notes and your pc and keep going relax and cool ..............

regards
george

  #17

thanks george! I'm back to myself again. I finish baehavioral science already and starting biochemistry. It is difficult to understand the kaplan notes if you will not listen to the webprep. I usually read first the notes before I open the web. It is more easy to understand than listening to the webprep without familiarizing yourself or have any idea on the topic. Because the webprep is plain audio and the visual aids that you will see there was found in your lecture notes. Take the diagnostic test it will help you to prioritized the subjects.
Goodluck!

hi elsa,
dont get frustrated.
it happens with everyone...i have just now finished my web prep course, and yesterday only gave the simulated exam and even after listening all the audio could not perform that well.
i was also feeling very bad,and thinking of giving up...but now i am back to myself,
during webPrep, if u find anything very difficult to read, try sometimes listening audio first and than read the lecture, sometimes it helps,or just skip the hard topic for 1-2 days and do something easy, that will give u some self confidence and start the difficult one on some other day,so u wont loose your precious time.
keep going,
we all need each others support smiling face

  #19

Thank you USMLE prep, I am now starting pharmacology in the webprep.
Thanks for the encouragement.

12-16 hrs/day, but only for 5 wks. at my school no one studies more than 6 wks. i had no idea this was unusual. perhaps it's bc we have monthly 8 hour exams...

  #21

i studied for step 1 for about 5-6 hours a day (excluding weekends) for 5 months. looking back, i think 5 mos was too long. if only i had the mental intensity at that time it wouldn't have run that long. mental fatigue got the better of me. im just glad i got more than 85.

paraphrasing andre agassi's statement - it's not the duration that counts, it's the intensity.

good luck! just keep striving! grin
