A case study is conducted to determine if women who delay childbearing are at increased risk for having children with low birth wt. a group of women who were at least 35 years old during their first pregnancy are compared with a group of women who were btwn age of 20-24 yr. during their first pregnancy.

age
20-24 >34 total #
low b.wt 21 54 75
n'l b.wt 404 745 1149
total: 425 799 1224

what's the odds ration for an older woman to have an infant w/ low b.wt?
a. (21/425) / (54/ 799)
b. (54/799) / (21/ 425)
c. (54/745) / (21/ 404)

C......

construct the 2 x 2 table.......with

a = who are >35 and have LBW = 54

b = who are >35 and have normal babies = 745

c = 20-24 ys old with LBW babies =21

d =20-24 yr old with normal babies = 404

with this table the u get......a/c / b/c = 54/21 / 745/404 which is the same as C rearranged....
