Hi.
I recently received my Dean's letter. I was disappointed to see it is only ~ 3-4 sentences long. Will this suffice? It's about slightly more than half of one page, inclusive of the logo etc at the top of the page. I know this is a terrible letter, but since progs don't give much importance to IMG Dean's letters, do I need to ask for a longer one? Thing is, the current Dean at my school doesn't know me. How can I request him for one more, without pissing him off?

Hey from what I know they need the MSPE now, not the Dean's letter...the dean's letter they say does not give a proper account of a graduate's med school performance, thats why the MSPE. The MSPE is wat u need for ERAS not the dean's letter...last year they'd made an exception for some cases who could not go back and get a MSPE ready but i think this year it may not be so...but do check on this from other sources as well, i'm kinda green on this myself.

Dean's letter is now replaced by something called MSPE = Medical school performance evaluation. it is many pages long and its format can be downloaded from the eras website. you should try to make your own MSPE and get your dean to sign it.

Dear all,
I am applying for 2009 but still haven't learn much about the process.
So 2009 applicants need to submit MSPE signed by the dean instead of Dean's letter?
To do that we have to download the format from ERAS and get the dean fill and sign it?
Please correct me if I am wrong.

MSPE is an evaluation of ur performance as a med student...it has to be signed by whoever is responsible for student education in ur institute...and yes deans letter doesnt have to be submitted anymore....this year in case IMGs could not submit MSPE (like if there insti did not issue one) they could say so on ERAS and an letter of recommendation would be put in its place...i didnt do this...dont know if it will be same this yr
the ECFMG format cannot be generalised or filled like a form, it only gives u an idea of what a MSPE is and how they want it to be made....not all institutes outside US will have all that information about there student or be ready to give it to you...
So what usually happens as motorola pointed out above is that you use the format to style ur own MSPE (or if some senior has done it last yr from ur institute, their's may be used as a template) and then see if ur edu dept agrees to sign it....this can be a bit tricky, especially the last appendix portion in the ECFMG format where there are graphs...my insti looked at me like i was a raving lunatic when i showed them those graphs!!
Use ur MSPE to bring thru info u cant put in anywhere like if u have done a residency after ur med school from the same insti, make sure ur insti includes that...
It is a list of ur objective peformance so u dont really need a dean who remembers u
Also remember MSPE doesnt matter for IMGs as much as it does for AMGs coz most US institutions know that foreign schools dont have this system and so they cut us slack as long as the info is consistent with say ur transcripts and other details...
Hopefully havent confused matters further

Thank you for so many responses.
From what I know, MSPE is for AMGs, while they accept Dean's letter for IMGs. Has this changed this year?
I can d/l the format and fill it up, but I don't know whether I can tabulate graphs and pies etc. Plus, to construct graphs, for each subject, and also for 'Honesty, Integrity', 'Treats patients with compassion', 'Respects others'!! My school doesn't keep records of these. Secondly, I'm obviously gonna feel like placing myself at the top! Thirdly, dunno whether the new Dean will sign for something as specific as my 'Putting others' needs first' blindly, never having met me!
Any suggestions please? Gosh, this is so confusing!

just omit those points (putting others needs etc) from ur MSPE. Or if you think your dean will sign it...write superlative things about yourself !!! graphs etc...plot anything that you think your dean will sign !!!
hence as mukho said...find one that some senior has made in your college OR make anything that potrays you as the best person on earth ... as long as your dean signs it. Omit things that you think your dean will object.

"I can d/l the format and fill it up"...couldnt help but reply to this paheli....i dont think u can just download the form and fill it if it is the same form i saw...it has "template" written on it in bold above, no space to actually enter narratives where they ask for it and the language is for a 4th year student which most of us are not...u can use it to type out a new form that looks like it with ur data in it....good luck with extolling urself

Yeah, sorry mukho, I was not clear. You're right, I can't use it as a form to be filled up. I meant I'll take ideas from it.
Another job to be done......... Any one offering to take my CK for me? I'd really appreciate it. Plus, I'll allow you to put it on your CV to give yourself that All-rounder look!   [I'm only looking for candidates who can do it better than I myself could......which, umm, makes a lot of you eligible. ] I'm only looking for one person, so first come, first served, early bird get the chance to take CK once more, blah blah.

I am even more confused now. I asked a friend who matched this year whether we need Dean's letter, he told me only medical students need that, not the graduates. Now here comes MSPE which is more complicating.

ECFMG places a neutral letter in lieu of a Dean's Letter or MSPE, if these ones cannot be obtained from a foreign medical school.
Most non-US medical schools will never write or sign such a detailed MSPE. It's ridiculous to demand such a document from a foreign school. This is meant for AMGs.
It is possible, however, to write a letter summarizing your performance detailed in your school transcript and clerkships. Then make the Dean print it with the school's stationary and sign it.

This is what I found on www.ecfmg.org:
"If you are unable to secure the MSPE from your medical school, you must indicate this on Page 12 of your Common Application Form (CAF) - MyERAS Application. A neutral placeholder letter will be provided in place of a MSPE. The placeholder letter will be provided to all of the programs to which you apply, and will state, "This is in lieu of a MSPE." This will ensure that your application will appear as complete for those programs that require a MSPE before considering your application."

Thanks, Beiwen. That piece of information clears my thoughts.
Actually I emailed that matched friend again, he told me MSPE was for AMGs. At least he was not asked for that. Anyway, it won't hurt if I ask my medical school whether they provide MSPE.

You're right njcjny, I also sent a letter and email asking my medical school the same thing, detailing and explaining what that letter should be about. I made a list of the data that should be included in case they have them. This won't hurt. But I won't complicate the issue further if they fail to provide me with some. All in all, they can write a letter summarizing what is on my transcript already
