Hi guys I need your opinion. I am an IMG who will apply for 2009 match. I opt for an H1b visa. I want to take step 3 before september but there's a possibility that I'll be doing an observership with a private US doctor. If I do observership, it will be hard for me to concentrate on my step 3 preparation. Which do you think is more important, having a USCE or getting high score in Step 3? Thanks guys.

getting an interview comes before getting the visa so i think u should go for the USCE ( though doing it at a pvt pct isnt very helpful, still its better than no USCE)...start studying slowly for step 3 and take it sometime in november-dec...it get hectic with interviews but its doable...i am assuming u are ECFMG certified...all the best!

Hi mukho thanks. Yes I am ecfmg certified. I am just confused coz some people say its better to have passed step 3 prior to sept 1 application as it strengthens one's application. I am just confused.

logically u are competing with AMGs...who dont have step 3...but they do have loads of USCE...so thats what i would get on my application first (in fact that is what i did in reality) but yes step 3 is essential for visa and u have to do it in less than ideal time line but then nothing is ideal! ...

USCE trump step3 by miles. So get as much USCE as possible maybe even in a hospital setting. Good luck

Thanks kotikoti. I've read your post and it was really inspiring. Did u have USCE? My problem is that I will be going back in July to my home country and the remaining days I'll be spending here in the US is enough for step 3 preparation as I have not found any hospitals or private doctors willing to provide a USCE.

I had only one month of USCE but it was very helpful, since I was able to get a very good letter from the attending. Of course if you cannot get a place to do USCE, then Step 3 is a good idea, plus it puts you in line for an H visa. I believe the more years you have been out of medical school, the more important the USCE becomes so you can get some letters from US physicians. If you are a fresh graduate with good scores, you should be fine for most programs except those that specifically ask for a USCE.
