Hi everybody!! I desperately need your help: I recently realized that in order to start residency in July 1st '08 and obtain the H1B visa, I should have the step 3 results by June 10th... 1. How long do the results take to come out? 2.Are they coming out the 3rd Wed a.m after your exam like step 1 & 2? 3.when is the last day that I can take my exam in order to have my results by June 10th??? Please help me, apparently I only have 2-3 weeks for step 3 .... Thanks so much in advance!

i think i have heard that you get your results by 3-4 weeks...its generally like step 1 and ck but sometimes takes a week extra...but the people who are done with step 3 will be able to advise better.. Good luck...dont worry...study well..

Thanks for your replies guys Mukho, My program's lawyer said that there is a procedure to take the visa in 15 days if you have step 3+ pay $1000, so once I am starting July 1st I guess worst case scenario June 10th+ 15 days= June 25th, I should be able to have it before I start.... IF I PASS THE EXAM of course... otherwise I will start with J1 but I would like to avoid it. I am doing Crush + FA + UW questions. I took Step 2 ck 4 weeks ago (scored 90) so I kinda remember the kaplan notes. I still have to practice the software and the cases though. Any suggestions? Do you think my recourses are ok? Thank you

ok...am sure u've spoken to ur program lawyer regarding this time line ur aiming at..if u havent i suggest u do...also make sure the program ur in isnt in a state that requires licenseing (coz u cant get h1b b4 that)... its great that u are going for step 3 so soon after ck....so yes, ur resources sound fine...but i will say do swanson geriatrics and EM (as i advice to all ) solve as much of UW as u can, do it soon so that u get an idea as to what type of ques come....for CCS, practise on the USMLE CD cases they send (its the same one u got with step 1 and 2) and then start on the UW ones...do about 3-5 a day....i think u'll do good...if u need UW CCS/FA as attachment send me a PM...all the best

Mukho, thanks so much for your reply and help. I wish I could buy you a drink I have talked with the lawyer and my program and I am trying to figure it out. I have applied for step 3 in Connecticut but my hospital is in NYC so I am trying to figure out the license eligibility/application... In the meantime I am studying for step 3+ I have a full time job in research. I just hope to get done with all these and be ok at the end, my last 6 months have been crazy. I had to take step 1, 2cs and 2 ck in December 26th, February 4th and March 31st respectively in order to make it. AND NOW THEY ARE TELLING ME I HAVE TO TAKE STEP 3 AS WELL for the visa!!! Anyway, I have bought the UW online and I am making the MCQs but not the cases yet. Do UW has the same software as the USMLE CD for their CCS? or it's just printing and reading the cases??? or i am doing something wrong? I appreciate your help and support very much, Best, K.

ur very welcome UW unfortunately has just print and read cases ...so u have to get used to the software on the usmle cds and then while u practise the UW cases try to type out orders on the USMLE software (make sure u keep the location i.e office, ER constant) to get the hang of it...sounds weird but once u do it its fairly simple Everyone applys in connecticut, it doesnt matter with respect to ur licensing in NYC (which u wont need for resdiency anyways as NYC doesnt require license for residency) Well looks like ur all settleted and ready to study...go for it...GL

Hi Ki67, I was reading the forum 'cause I had some dilema too and came up with your situation that is similar to mine, in a sense. I'm doing full time research too and planing to apply this year for Match 2009. The program I want to apply for requires step 3 taken. The problem is that I need 1 year of training before I can apply for step 3. That doesn't make much sense to me. So question: How did you apply for step 3 before starting the program. If that's what you did and could give me an idea of what to do, I would thank you so much. I'm actually working on Ki67 stuff too. Thanks a lot. DocAg

DocAg I didnt exactly get the ques, but step 3 has to be applied thru states and there are a few states like conneticut that dont require u to have residency training before taking step 3...so just apply thru that...that is what all IMGs do in order to qualify for h1b before joining programs...hope i got the ques right

in order to apply to step 3 you must have passed Step 1, 2CK and 2CS.

DocAg I agree 100% with mukho, I think he replied already. Mukho, thanks for your concern I found that there is a: Delay in USMLE Step 3 Score Reporting: Most score reporting of Step 3 results occurs within four weeks of testing. However, because of necessary modifications to the test item pool, there will be a delay in reporting for some examinees testing in March 2008. The target date for reporting Step 3 scores for most examinees testing from early March through early April will be Wednesday, April 23, 2008. It is possible that scores will be available earlier than this date; please check this website for updates... I hope that's what you are referring to, probably too many people were taking the exam and anyway unfortunately I cannot take it earlier... Studying as much as I can I would hate to fail... If they don't come out in 3 weeks I AM in trouble.... I hope to be able to make it... thanks again!!

Yes, I am on J1 research the last 4 years. I am pretty sure that there is a 5 year limit, at least for my program. If your boss agrees he can sponsor you for an H1, but that's an academic H1 if you are in research. If you do residency you have to make a new deal a.k.a ASK for a H1 otherwise they will still give you a J1 with all the waiver problems. It is not given that they will do it for you,but overall taking the H1 academic is much easier. Hope that helps

Hi Ki 67, Thnx for the explanation. One more question: If you decide to apply in other institution different that you are doing research, does J-1 visa research status has any restrictions?.. i mean does the program director can reject any application from this visa status?... Thnx again!!!

I am pretty sure he cannot, simply because they will issue a new J1 to work to the hospital, it's not that they are going to continue from the J1 u already have. You can come with an H1 or even without any visa and they will give you a new J1.

ram 3: I did not go through the regular match cause I am starting as a second year resident. Done all my im in europe in 2004. It's kind of unusual but sometimes hospitals need 2nd year residents for interns places that remains empty. makes sense?
