This is a question for a dear friend...he isnt a member of the forum so I though I would post a question on his behalf. His profile is as follows: 99/99/ CS ATTEMPT, passed cs on 2nd attempt/studying for step 3 and is presently an mph student in a very top notch university has 2 research jobs. He wanted to know if this attempt i cs would affect his odds of matching. I think the rest of his profile is so good that any PD would let go of the fact that he has an attempt in cs... what say guys? really need your opinion..

i think all success and all failures on our career graph do change odds of matching....but how much depends on how it is handled by him...he should be ready to ans why he has an attempt there...it should be there in his PS too....many univs have eligibility criteria regarding 'no attempts' so he could write in before applying there explaining what happened and see if it alters anything...once he gets a call, i think what matters most is his ability to carry himself...best of luck to him

agree with mukho. I know that IOWA doesnt take people with an attempt. however high the other scores are. but then most top places dont mind an attempt. so i think it is a scar in the CV but not a real bad one.
