Correct Answer C

EXPLANATION

The component of the new DTaP vaccine included to elicit protection against whooping cough (Bordetella pertussis) is acellular, composed of the pertussis toxoid, its filamentous hemagglutinin. It may or may not also include pertactin, another adhesin.

Since Bordetella is a mucosal surface pathogen, the most important protective immune response is of the IgA type. The vaccine components are designed to prevent binding of the toxin to the mucosa, which is normally mediated by the B component of the toxin.

An IgG response to the A component (choice D) is not correct because IgG is the primary Ig of the bloodstream ,and would not be the preferred protective response against a mucosal surface antigen. Furthermore, antitoxin antibodies work best when they stop the binding and importation of a toxin (the B component), not the A component.

An IgG response to the B component (choice E) is not correct because IgG is the primary Ig of the bloodstream ,and would not be the preferred protective response against a mucosal surface antigen.

There was debate about the vaccine...I don't know exactly...something about new and old vaccine and their effect...they did switch from old to new and them back...So, here in this question we are talking about acellular new vaccine, correct? What about another?
Because I think they are still using it...
Thanks Jean for the question.
