Hi, I am an IMG,green card holder, I did not match this year, I am currently working in a not-for-profit community clinic, I am working with a family physician, i am working since the past 8 months, initially it was just to observe the physician with the patients, but now the physician wants me to see patients and she is teaching me how to order tests and prescriptions, i have learned alot from her, she has given me LOR too. Now what will i call this experience, observership, extrnship, hands on clinical experience? what will i write for it when i fill the application for this year's match? any advice is welcome, also should i continue working with her, will it even be recognized as it is a clinical work?

Sounds more of an externship, if you're doing more than observing over there. Goodluck for the 2009 match !

For whatever clinical experience to be counted as USCE, the place you work should be officially recognized as ACGME approved program. That's what I was told by the med school clerks of a university I am working at...

its true that ACGME prog experience is what counts however if u have experience at a place that isnt then u would still mention it...and every year large number of IMGs do site these as USCE...in ur case MM my suggestion is that the term u use would be dependant on what ur supervisor has written in the LOR, if she says u have directly worked on patients under her supervision then its clinical hands on (though it should be clarified whether she had the legal authority to let u do so, meaning it shouldnt create trouble for her)....otherwise its still observership...

Thanks all of u for ur answers, yes she did mention in the LOR that I have worked under her supervision. I think i,ll go with hands on clinical work, it is not ACGME prog, but just a community clinic. The question again is should I continue working with her, I am working with her since sep 07 and in august 08 it would be one year.would it be counted as one year USCE?

unless you can find something better and as long as this doc is in the specialty you want to apply for (or a related one), there is no harm in continuing. remember.......a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. if you have an exam coming up or some other commitments, you can ask her if you can just be there certain days of the week, like on a part time basis. i'm working in a clinic part time and following another doctor on the days i don't work so that i can get my 3 LORs. none of the work i've done has been in an ACGME prog, but i've heard that lots of PDs do not have a problem with that.
