I second mukho. It happens everywhere, same as you will find wonderful people everywhere if you look.

Mukho...I agree with you say. Most profs are not bipolar. Its just that one HOD at our med school! But, I must say that all those profs in India have a completely different definition of RESPECT and DISCIPLINE. They think these can be given to students only by being strict to students. Anyway, I have spent only 5 years in India ( Thank God!!). I cant imagine spending so many years as you have there. But I know how the system works. Its great that you still feel this respect and value for your profs. And no, most profs are NOT bipolar. They do know their stuff and what to do. They have also gone through the same torture all their life. However, we US Citizens are NOT used to being disrespected and mistreated back home in USA. I went through so much personally....so much emotional trauma everyday....I cannot find it in my heart to forgive all those cruel things they said to me...but I do value the education and training they hammered into my head. So, everything has its place.

Its a healthy discussion as long as noone gets offended. There is no need to get offended. Its just the extreme experiences that we have had...the scars are still bleeding for many of us. But do those Profs really care what damage they did to us??? .....They made us stronger....Bla bla bla.....but it still hurts.

So don't believe everything that is said to you anything is possible. And, I'll pay back when I'm in a position to do so. Well said.

Jackofknives wrote: i wonder how you ever will survive your residency years being so easily offended, like your pgy1 year where basically you are lower than the shit that travels through the sewage pipes, being obused all day till no end. i, myself work in a lab where i was constantly told that im unfit and basically suck at what i do, and i just suck it up and continue my work. such is life mate, until you become the boss, just get ready to bend over and take it up the A**. Then as boss you will abuse others and here goes the ****ing cycle! I wonder when it would stop.

I always knew I would pay for being an IMG. However, I never realized just how big a price I would pay. This is not to say that I have any regrets about being am IMG because I don't. It's tough but not impossible. By the way, I don't think all we (IMG) need is thick skin...it's more like one giant callus!

I suppose I was exaggerating a little because it highly depends on the specialty of your choice and how malignant the program is. However, the bottom line is you will face a lot of criticisms throughout your career, particularly during residency years and although some might be unfair to you, it is imperative that you stay off the defensive stance and try to learn something from your situation.
