Hi everyone, here I'm answering a question I received on a private msg, and thought the answer may benefit others. its great that u want to start early, but u still have quite a lot of time! well, at this point of your career I'd give u one piece of advice that is, if u have to sit for the steps and u have to devote time to it anyways i'd say do it while u r still in med school, that's what I did, one it hepls to refresh concepts, two, u already have some fresh concepts to score good, and three, u have ur step one done , which will,be helpful while applying to electives, now most of the programs ask for it. so suppose u start ur application process somewhere around mid third yr so that u can do them in 4th year, u will have the results of step 1. the best page ever to search for electives is the aamc page. http://services.aamc.org/eec/students/ here it is. u will have to write to each of the programs separately. send them mails, ask them for the details u couldn't understand from the webpage. and about those again two pieces of advice, take those only who do not require F1 visa, coz that is expensive and a mess. and teher r few that accept the B1 visa. and two, plan to give ur step 2 cs, while on that trip so that u kill 2 birds with one stone. Good luck! and hope the info was useful! btw, mayo is one of the hospitals that do not require a f1, they accept b1. others are harvard, umass, cincinnati..and I don't remember any more. good luck!

who said F1 visa is expensive? It just requires you to pay $100 fee, nothing more, it is peanuts as compared to the clerkship fees you gotta pay at some of the hospitals. And it creates a good travel history which makes the task of getting a visa for residency that much easier
