What is the chances of an IMG, 05 grad, no surgical Post Grad in home country with average scores, to get into Categorical surgery?

Hard to say unless you try... I would say not more than 50%... It is always 50/50...

Not to discourage you anastomosis, I recently met a friend with stellar scores who (with his couple of friends) applied to surgery in the last match. He had finished his surgical residency as well as cardiosurgical fellowship in his home country (by the way that made him an old IMG). Acc. to his experience, to apply to surgery with avg.scores and gaps in CV with no substantial research/USCE/contacts is a huge gamble (suicide in his terms) where your odds of winning is exteremely slim. He matched with a prelim surgery prog though. (Scores play a BIIGG role). I think cat. surg is far more difficult. You don't need to loose heart by hearing this. You should give it a try atleast once to realize what you've always dreamed of. but if you can't afford wasting a year, I would suggest to keep backups.
