Hi, I read the following in Kaplan book but it is not clear to me. I will greatly appreciate it if someone could make an example. Thanks "informed consent can be overridden if the physician has a clear evidence to support a belief that full disclosure regarding the proposed treatment would result in severe emotional distress or would cause a patient to become more ill"

Thanks spinal shock. I understand this but what I was asking for was a concrete example For example a young patient with a severe leg infection requiring amputation. Of course she would be severely emotionally distressed but it is scary to think that the surgeon could just go on with the amputation without her consent and the chance for the patient to decide to have a second opinion...so I think I'm not understanding it right ... It will be great if someone could help me get a clear idea what it is meant with it. Thanks

In very rare situations physician can go without informed concent. It called therapeutic priviledge. Physician can withhold the information if he believes the disclosure can cause suffering/harm to the pt. For example, if the information can make emotionally unstable, depressed pt to became suicidal. Second example, when pt has unstable cardiac arrhythmia then anxiety by receving info can make it worse. But in the second one, it is going probably to be temporary measure. I hope it helps.

i think exception to informed consent only include scenarios where the tretment has very low chances of error or temporary solutions.....not sure though......
