k, so was doing goljan today, and i too was under impresion both neisseria types (gonnorhea and meningitidis) were encapsulated, but my study partner pointed out that gonorrhea is not (as per FA-says no polysaccharide capsule) but meningitidis does have capsule, but as we read goljan HY, dr. goljan as so says it is encapsulated, any inputs???

i was doing nbme 6 actually and a question was there basically about a gal who had her spleen removed whose sexually active and blah, blah, bascially wanted me to pick which one would give her probs and i had to choose btw strep pneumo or neisseria gonorrhea, and i knew the concept wanted me to know that since her spleen is gone, she can't kill encapsulated bugs, but i thought both were, and chose neisseria since she's sexually active, but if it has no capule as my friend and FA are saying, then im wrong rite, i shall have put strep. pneumo which we all know is encapsulated, correct??? did i mess this up too?? shocked

thoughts, pls explain, thx so much!!

K, This is sooooo esoteric and soooo unclear. Like what exactly was the original question? Like, WHERE did this patient grow this bug? The site makes a world of difference. Would somebody mind listing the real question just for my edification? shocked

just the difference in which neisseria has capsule or not.. n. gon has capsule or no?? i thought all neiserria had capsules, but i guess that is wrong.. no growth on agars or anything.. hope that helps!

http://www.textbookofbacteriology.net/neisseria.h...

"The only distinguishing structural feature between N. meningitidis and N. gonorrhoeae is the presence of a polysaccharide capsule in the former. The capsule is antiphagocytic and is an important virulence factor."

http://www.textbookofbacteriology.net/S.pneumonia...

Capsule
"A capsule composed of polysaccharide completely envelops the pneumococcal cells. During invasion the capsule is an essential determinant of virulence. The capsule interferes with phagocytosis by preventing complement C3b opsonization of the bacterial cells. 90 different capsule types of pneumococci have been identified and form the basis of antigenic serotyping of the organism."

This took <3 minutes on Google to find.....
