After a prolonged vacation in my homeland I am back to hit the books again but this time it will be different because I understand that more important than step 3 by september first is to have USCE therefore I will start working on both aspects but any free time i got i will dedicate to study for step 3.

Got the DVDs and the notes and some other staff that i have to go over in the CD i bought from usmlepack.

Good luck everyone and please drop a line of advice regarding the material to study for step 3.

Ok today my homework is to surf the web looking for observership or externship first in my area. I live in Michigan then i will look in Chicago. Freida is good start plus I shall start targeting the places to apply for internal medicine.

Secondly when there is free time will review the kaplan notes for step 3 with its correspondent DVD.

Yeah this part of the forum is not active at all...

Nothing done for step 3 today. Basically I spent the day exploring freida for programs. I couldn't find anything in my area that are posted in their website. Downloaded a couple of applications in the Michigan State University but i think it is for medical students not for graduates like myself.

The Cleveland clinic Educational Foundation has observerships and externships but it is in OHIO. How in the world i will go there if I have to pay my bills here.

Nothing in Chicago.

Maricopa integrated system has observership as well but again how i will manage to survive in there.

Well I have the feeling that nobody doesn't want to share the info about this and probably is easier to find observerships by conections/sponsors...

Congratulations Ivonne for your certification and determination to start with Step 3!

Regarding with USCE, I agree with caduceus, apply everywhere and consider to move for the time of your observership. I know, you have to work for bills. I'm in the same boat. But luckily in Florida there are a couple of places with observerships: Mount Sinai, Jackson Hosp. and Cleveland Clinic in Miami area I think. But they are all booked till September.

A good idea is to establish connections in hospitals or even private practice in your area.

Good Luck!

Yeah, you guys are right, there is no other choice. To find an observership for graduates is hard.

Thanks a lot BW, I just called The Mayo clinic and they are going to e-mail me the application package and for sure I will call the places you pointed. Thanks a lot buddy!

Hi Ivonne, now on step 3 boat? How is your study going? I could not read a word about step 3 while I am hunting more opportunities for USCE. Until now, I am only having one, observering in that nice derma physician's private clinic. Hope I can find university opportunities. Best of luck with your CK. I know you will score pretty high for that. I won't be surprised to hear a 260+.

  #14

Ivonne, Hi! I want to wish you the best for your score [looks like you don't know the numbers yet??raised eyebrow], your Step 3 [which I'm sure you'll demolishnod], and USCE. Regarding the last, I'll repeat what's been said above. Don't look only in your neighborhood, chances are you won't succeed. I'm not discouraging you, dear, but a hundred email/calls may get you one spot. Yep, it's tough for us grads. You're living in the US, so some of it is easy eg visiting nearby hosps in person etc, but othwise, it's just as hard as for the rest of us. You're in a better position, as you're already done with the 1st 3 tests, so spend some time on this. I'm finding it really hard to do this along with CK. It takes a lot of time, dedication, determination, perseverance, and ability to take a lot of rejections too. But, don't get dejected. And, any contacts you have, any at all, use them, babe! Even if they're not medical people, ask your close friends and fam if they know a nice doctor, or if they're good friends etc with a doctor.

I don't wish to pull you down, but you just have to maximize your chances. Cast your net wide and just tell yourself there's no reason not to be successful, and get on it. I wish you all the luck you need! smiling face

Njcjzy: Thanks, i should do the same, look for internal medicine physicians in my area and call them for observership opportunities while applying to a University Hospital observership/externship. Also starting on Monday i shall go to the free clinic I used to go for volunteer work. Patience and persistance are the key!!

Paheli: Will do sweetheart. You are absolutely right, a network of contacts will help for sure. Here I go...

What am I doing for step 3?

Two days went by and I still don't have nothing regarding USCE but came out with the conclusion that I wont be able to do a formal USCE ASAP due to paperwork process and the cost of it. Don't lose faith people looking for observerships, yes they exist but it cost a bunch of $$$$. Definetely I will start the application process to get a good one but again it will take time to find an open spot and to save the $$$$. While waiting definetely it is important to keep in touch with patients even if the clinical experience doesn't have to much weight. We can replace LORs during the application process right?

When I was in my country i felt so inclined to start the residency there but finally i decided to stick to USCE because we have almost just 2 months to start sending paperwork to ERAS and 4 months to start the residency application process.

Finally, today I will start studying for step 3. Kaplan DVDs, the kaplan notes, Qbook and NMS are my study tool for know. Afterwards will suscribe to the Qbanks and implement with more books. Good luck everyone and please don't ask me for ck because I got nothing yet ok.

hi ivvone i m ina same boat too i m in chicago i did observership at my kids paeds clinic for 2-3 months last year since then still looking for usce .

Hi shabby,

Keep looking to get a teaching Hospital USCE. There are a few of them, as I said before but I think it is a good investment since 1 K added to many K we already spent in the steps and we will spend in the application process is not going to make a difference.

As for me, I already have defined the area where i will apply for residency and therefore for USCE. Thanks God for your guidance!!!

My step 3 prep is going slow...but we will get there. I am enjoying the process!

Hi Ivonne, good to see that you are moving on with step 3. I may start mine from tomorrow evening, hopefully. If I can stick to it, I want to clear it at the end of July. One question to ask you, why you said we can send our paperwork to ERAS in two months? What will we send, then? Thanks.

  #22

Hey njcjzy, by July we can buy our tokens and start sending out LORs, MSPEs to ERAS and start working on our personal statements and so on.

Thanks, Ivonne, for the informations.

Today, I talked with a dermatologist who is an assistant professor briefly on the phone and was told that step 3 would not add any weight to my application with my current step 1 and 2 scores. So I think I will concentrate on improving my spoken English and USCE instead.

  #24

I agree with you about USCE njcjzy. USCE is the priority!!!

With God's grace I got an spot for USCE BTW there are USCE opportunities people but we have to do our HOMEWORK, there is not an easy road. I will start by June 1st.

Thanks God a got a job where i am making a bunch of $$$ to pay for my USCE and later for the residency application so I am working almost 70 hours/week got home and just fall asleep. Will start step 3 soon...
