can anyone here please tell me how program directors calculate time since graduation. is it until the day u apply on ERAS or is till match day? do they take into account the exact month of ur graduation or do they just look at the general year of ur graduation till the general year of ur application/ match? plz answer this one. i tried many places but could find not satisfactory answers. thank you all.

i just cant get over ur scores, mindblowing man!! they count it from the day of ur graduation till the date on which u start residency tentatively like july 1 2009 for those applying in the 2009 match...at least many programs do that....many dont specify...its best to email each program separately and ask if u are eligible or not...coz u are bound to ahve other criteria that ma cause ambiguity like clinical experience, visa status...so what i did was draft a common email with my individual scores and qualification and questions and sent it to all programs i was applying to...

Thanks mukho for clarifying the issue. I really needed to sort this one out. Thanks so much again. I was hoping they would take the application date as the cutoff, which would push me under the 5 yr bar. Alas! I now need to live with the tag of an old grad. Dont know how much my MD in Internal Med would count for though. Hey... u even got a waiver because of ur Peds MD here, right? Heard of anyone gettin a waiver in IM? I'd sure love that. Talkin bout scores...how bout the 3 99s u have? On a 1-10 scale of awesome, i'll rate it right at the top. A perfect 10. Now THAT is mindblowing!!!

MD counts depending on the insti...like Univ of maryland peds prog specifically said when i asked for eligibility that u would have to have a PG degree from home....then again some rare univs dont consider it...so even if u are an old grad (like I was) when u explain that u were doing a residency a lot of doors open...so wear the tag of old resident not old grad I dont know bout IM waivers but u would have to email the medicine board and they could give u a better idea (best to call though) ... keep the scores coming ..all the very best!

again it varys from program to program...mostly in peds i got 5 yrs cutoff...some IM prog i have heard are 3 yrs...most good programs, i like to believe, give ur application a chance if u've been doing something profession related in the years in between...(though not always as true as i would hope)

Hey mukho thanks again for all the suggestions! Will certainly work on them. I wouldn't mind another 99 for sure.

I think that grad yr is counted from the day you graduated to the day you apply THAT IS 1st SEPTEMBER.(ERAS applying time ) cuz i know when many of my friends graduated in 2005 and applied in 2007 sept. , they got the tag of 2 yrs old grad.

match2010 this gets it a little confusing...but something that i'd much prefer Hey mukho when did u graduate? Which month of 2002? Mine is 31st September, 2003. Very finely balanced u see! If I apply on Ist September of 2008, I've been a graduate for under 5 yrs if they take the cut off date as the application date...but if its the interview/residency date which is the cut off then it doesnt really matter, I'd be past 5 years. Do they also look at the month of graduation or do they just look at the year? But then mukho says i'm an old resident and not an old graduate. Thats some consolation. May be if I learn to utilize my previous residency card properly the year of graduation wont matter much. We'll see how it goes.... Any more opinions on this subject???

i think its from year of graduation.not specific month.just the year.from then on till the yr of your application for residency. the whole iv process in itself is a 1 year long process.i mean you start in july application process, apply in sept and it goes on till march for the result and then 2-3 months of wait for sending you contract etc. i think for imgs its unfair if the consider that 1 year of application,iv and match.obviously one cannot work that time unless you are a graduate here. old grads but with clinical experience should be given some sort of waiver, for those who did residency may be they should be a little flexible as far as date of grad is. those who matched this year and old grads may know better.so please suggest.

My PD and I look thinking about when applicants will start residency, that's how we determine how many years. Yes, this is going to change from program to program.

So bbb u say this varies from one program to another? Think thats wat i need to keep in mind n try add some weight to my cv by stressing on the fact that i'm done with md in internal med from my home country. bbb do u think that could help out with some programs?
