Hi everyone.

How does one travel within a town when staying in an unfamiliar city? eg during Observership, you may be required to stay in a city which you've never been to before, for ~4 weeks. So, how do people get around for the basic minimum travel?

Getting accomodation close to where you're Observing is key to survival. But, how about moving beyond your room and the hospital? eg say shopping for food etc? I should prolly mention that at present, I'm not considering renting a car or anything.

I'll really appreciate any input in to this from people who've been there, and those who have any ideas.

Thanks a lot. smiling face

Thanks, silver. Some cities [like NY] are well-connected by public transport. But, other cities are not. And, it's with regard to these that I was asking my qn. Sorry, I should have mentioned.

right. well i assumed you might be in a city like that.

well i guess that leaves you with the option of the bus. other than than i would say once you're there you could ask your colleagues what the best way would be to get around and what options there are, plus by then you would also have some sense of what the city is about and where things are and understand how to move about.

if you need some idea before you get there, why not ask them now about your transport options...who knows they might have a shutte bus--that is if you're observership is at a hospital or university campus (as i do not know of the nature of your observership). for example some hospitals offer housing--dorms....so if you're residing in them then some do offer a shuttle bus service. again, i don't know of your exact location.

and besides this, all i could say is hopefully you'll make some nice friends who have cars and will help you out and take you where you need to go!

GL

Yes, you're right. I'll be making friends anyway, so perhaps I can request them for help, if possible.

Thank you, silver! smiling face Have a good day!

PHL , yes frds can help or may b not even they want to since life style here is really different fr where we come fr far East .

Also as a girl , be cautious travel alone with new frd male or female . I rather take public transit or taxi [ cab ] or walking if in safe neighbourhood .
Yes , the hospital can give u all link , advice , it's best to ask with google local town living etc info with tourism [ not to tour ] that will give u best easy way to stay , move around, food u like where can u get .

So best is if kn where about , ask the local, also local web, tourism of that particular city , bed & breakfast , motel etc.
Cheapest usually is near that university as rooming or rooming in the university's dome that has long wait usually , unless u come in off season of school , but if u r like some of us like to have own place since away fr home is already stress enough with in new land , new culture , so might want own place at the end of the day .

By any mean I can help , let me kn , also start net working , spreading words among , fm , frds to frds to get local contact that will ease u alot . u never kn u might get same culture accomodation or hotel they owned with decent place good price with ur favorite food around easy to get .

Hope to see u soon .nod

Every bigger city in the US has some form of public transportation. Maybe not all of them are as well organized as the one in NYC, but it is feasible to use it for your commuting purposes. Good deal of hospitals in urban areas has also some form of employee shuttle (at least to get you to their remote parking lot - land in cities is expensive, hence not all institutions have on-site parking that can serve all of their employees/patrons), so you might want to explore that as well.

Thanks. I'll ask about that.
