ECFMG form-filling error

Hi guys. I think I've made a really big and stupid mistake on my ECFMG application.

The first time that I filled out the ECFMG form, before even applying for Step 1, where they ask you for all details pertaining to your medical education, there's this point where you are required to fill out the 'Clerkships' that you've done. I was an idiot coz I assumed that they were talking about clerkships done in the US, and I left it blank. Now I realize that they were talking avout our regular med school clinical exposure, though we don't call it 'clerkships'. My creds have since been verified by ECFMG with the records at my school.

I don't have the exact dates and durations of the various rotations done while I was a student, though I have successfully completed all that was required.

I will be writing ECFMG soon, but I wanted to know if anyone has faced this problem before, or if anyone has any info regarding this issue. Can this error be rectified? Will this have any impact on the application this year? [I'm going to try and get it corrected as soon as I can, though.]

Thank you so very much.

I think it COULD be a big deal, and I'll tell you why. I've read of people falling short of a few weeks of rotations in specific subjects,[e.g. 2 weeks short in IM etc] and I think this could hamper getting state registration. This will in effect affect your ability to begin your residency on time. I don't know how those people solved their problems though. So, I'm a little anxious.

i did fill it ...may not really matter in the long run i guess coz its what u fill in the ERAS application that is conveyed to programs...but its best if u could change it so that all information is consistant...
what i wanted to emphasise however was most programs will require u to have hour and week transcripts that require exact dates (mnths and year) and even hours...so its a good idea to speak to ur academic section clerk of ur med school...ask him to bring out ur year schedule and then make a file of these...if ur university doesnt give this transcript then request for one...mostly score, week and hour transcripts are required...i also got a internship rotation transcript...thing is u will require it later for state licensing too, especially if u are aiming for MA or CA...of course there are med schools here that absolutely refuse to give these transcripts, i am sure there are more ppl on the forum who could share their experiences....

Thanks a lot, mukho. I'll look up some more colleagues and seniors who have made it to a US residency. I myself get surprised when they respond, coz they used to steal my food portions in med school hostel!sticking out tonguegrin So, now if they can help me out, I'm more than happy to let go of those grudges!

Anyway, no more jokes, this is a serious matter. shaking head

As you suggested, I'll look up the state requirements as well. It will save me some indigestion later.

Have a great weekend, mukho.

Is that possible? I thought you couldn't alter what you entered. That's why they mention a number of times to check and recheck, coz it forms a permanent part of your record. Angel, do let me know if you succeed. Thanks. I'll keep you informed too.

Hey paheli relax, I think you can call ECFMG and send them again. Secondly, The thing you are talking about the state licensure, it is completely different. When you match your state will send that form of rotations/clerkships to you and you will send that form to med school to fill up everything. It has nothing to do with ECFMG records. Moreover, I have sent all rotations to ECFMG right from 3rd year onwards. There are my seniors who sent the internship rotations ONLY. So its not a big deal at all. But just clarify your doubt by calling them.

Your post brings me some relief, lost. Thanks. Problem is, I did not do my i'ship at my home hospital, I did it elsewhere [i.e. what is called 'externship' in India] So, my med school prolly can't fill that for me. Also, there's this point on the ECFMG Member page where they ask for Clerkships. When I was recently filling up for CK, I noticed that I had left it blank [out of ignorance in those early days] That's what got me worried. If it's just about i'ship though, I'm comfortable coz I have the dates. I'll call up ECFMG anyway, as you said, at least for my peace of mind.

Have a nice weekend.smiling face

Oh, I have one more qn please, lost. Is there any situation whereby a candidate does not meet the criteria for registration in the state they matched in? In that case, what happens to the contract with the prog? So, to avoid this, I guess you gotta research the state registration criteria too, prior to applying in Sep?

Thanks.

I am not sure, but my impression is that no ECFMG entries has any role/significance for match process... My point is to say that you are absolutely fine even if forgot to list your rotations... Main reason to provide as much info as possible is to make sure that your med school credentials match those of US med school, and if you do not have enough hours/courses/rotation cycles, the ECFMG will simply not verify your med school diploma... Actually, that is why for your match the AAMC asks to provide MSPE and medschool transcript... If the diploma is verified, you don't need to spend extra efforts... If you want to add extra info, be prepared to learn that your credentials will have to be re-verified again...

However, you have to make sure you make your graduate story as complete as possible when you compose your portfolio in AAMC/NRMP system...

Thanks, Justice. So, I guess I won't get hyper about this now. I'll just gather the reqd info by July, I suppose? As I said, my creds have been verified. I'll get ready for the AAMC-ERAS game then.

Thanks a lot, everyone! smiling face

Dear Paheli... I recall clearly that I did the same thing that you did! I left it blank.... but you know what?? it was so meaningless that I did not even remember it!!!... it was not a problem at all!!! I got my ECFMG certificate, I matched and you know the rest of the story, I'm almost certain that this form is only for ECFMG records or stadistic info.... don't worry at all!!! and also you don't need to write them or change the info... believe me it doesn't matter and it has nothing to do with the match!

Oh, thank you so much, Glo! Ok, that settles it, everyone's saying so. Did you need those exact dates for registering with ERAS, btw? Thanks.

P.S. Is that you eagerly awaiting your patient on your first day? sticking out tongue

You will need the exact dates, grades and all that sort of stuff for your MSPE and transcript because it has to include those things but not for the form that you will need to fill when you resister to ERAS (CAF or common application form) so just try to figure those out (or make your school figure those out grin) because that info needs to be included in your transcript and in your MSPE. Best of lucks dear friend!
