ask the patient that every time he is in a stressfull situation.. recognise the oncoming panic and start breathing in slowly and deeply.. concentrating on each breath.... it basically prevents the hyperventilation asssociated with panic and is a good distraction..this is for acute situation.. for long time relief..similar breathing excercise courses are available which he shud be asked to attend and most importantly..NOT TO AVOID THE STRESSOR.. repeated exposure in increasing amounts is the best treatment...

If the SP says he is drinking alcohol or he is smoking only to relieve his stress, then u just counsel him dat there are other healthier ways of relaxation like yoga , meditation, music ,sport etc whichever he enjoys. iF THE SP gives +ve h/o breathless n palpitations and if u feel it is due to his panic attacks ,u just tell him dat it cud be one of the diagnosis,n there r other possibilities like thyroid......blah...blah.....and dat we need to do more tests like....TSH....blah,blah............ I dont think WE need 2 EXPLAIN 2 THE PATIENT HOW HE needs 2 breathe in n out. we DONT need 2 tell The SP dat it is only due 2 his fear (panic) dat he is having those breathlessness and palpitation attacks n dat if he breathes in n out slowly n deeply,he wud be fine? Or do we have 2?What do u think folks?.

i was just talking bout cases which seem like panic attacks..NOT ALL CASES.. i happen to know the difference and most students will do so too i assume.. the question was not very clear and dats how ii assumed it..!!!! its all a matter of how u percieve it.. if a case of panic attack asks u to explain "RELAXATION TECNHIQUES..(it has happened in the exam..!) ,my answer might not seem so stupid anymore...

no offense was meant my friend, I agree , what u ve said is right in practical point of view but 4 the purpose of this exam,if i get a case of panic attack,I will not take the risk of telling the SP ABOUT RELAXATION TECHNIQUES ,as i already mentioned i wud just say abt the possibilities of diagnosis n then trt will be discussed only after tests like....,counsel on smoking......then any questions?it was nice working with him,tataaaaa....................
