Hi there, I didn't decided yet but, How would be here in US for a IMG a career as a researcher? I'm FMG, with ECFMG certificate soon in this year, so this are my questions: 1- Is necessary or should be a residency (IM OR FM ) important before to start a career as a researcher? 2- Is necessary PhD, MPH or Fellow research before to start? 3- Opportunities, salaries, fields, where? 4-How to start? anyone knows about any case? Maybe I'll apply for IM next year, I'm currently doing research here in US, but someone ask me : If I'll do research as a career so...???? thanks forward

All i can say is that you are limiting yourself if you dont complete a residency program.

Salary can be around $40000 a year. You can do much better as a doctor.

1- Is necessary or should be a residency (IM OR FM ) important before to start a career as a researcher? -No, you can do research without doing residency. 2- Is necessary PhD, MPH or Fellow research before to start? -no but if you have those you could have the possibility to make more $. 3- Opportunities, salaries, fields, where? -You have to do the research.. You can put your resume online at different sites like medzilla.com or careerbuilder, or go to different university sites and look up the clinical research departments -start calling and expect to be rejected a LOT. 4-How to start? anyone knows about any case? Yes, I had a couple of friends who went into research. They just knocked on a LOT of doors and made a LOT of phone calls before finding something. It will take time; you have to be patient. Sometimes its just a matter of luck. Maybe I'll apply for IM next year, I'm currently doing research here in US, but someone ask me : If I'll do research as a career so...???? ONLY go into research as a lifetime career if you are very passionate about it and it makes you happy. With research, as my friends tell me, you won't get to make more than 40-60K. Even with 10 years experience, you won't really get to advance more than that. With residency you can make more than double this amount after completing 3-5 years of residency. Think about it... and make the decision... think about what is important to you, and what you enjoy doing, and how you would like to live the rest of your life.

hey guys all these questions about research and the money you make with it is making me wonder... Do all the faculty members of the University hospitals who are always indulged into research make some extra cash with it in addition to the pay from the university?? or is it just part of their job at the university? i thought they just do it for the love of it, or to have publications in their name etc,

Than you for your answers, all of you!!! and thanks DrVirgo for the explanations, very useful. I think the best way for us is the residency, not only for the $ - and it's a very important issue - but for the opportunities too and y if you like research, you can do as a specialist if you want, very smart! regards
