hey guys,
i would really appreciate it if somebody can enlighten me on the exact requirements for step 3 application....say is it possible if i become ecfmg certified but have yet to graduate by the summer of 2009 ( so not officially an MD at the moment) ??
and 1 more thing....a person becomes ecfmg certified if he completes step 1 and 2 ck n ccs successfully irresepective of wether he's and MD or not yet right??!!

no actually in order to be ECFMG certified you have to be done and passed Steps 1,2ck and 2cs AND your degree verified by ECFMG with ur med school...so u have to be done with ur medschool and ur degree should be available for verification by the ECFMG. Hope that helps ! let us know if you need any more clarification.

I concur with drshvetasm. You need step 1, step ck & cs AND your diploma verified by ECFMG to be eligible for step 3. Please be warned that it takes sometimes several months for your diploma to get verified, the minimum would be 2 months.

mmmm...so lets say i'll graduate in june 2009....i won't be ecfmg certified until then....but can i still participate in the 2009 match or what.....pending my diploma to be issued in june and then i could start residency...?

no...u have to be ECFMG certified before i guess jan/feb of any yr to be a part of that same yrs march match. So if u think you would get your degree in june 2009, send the copies to ECFMG immediately and they would send it back for verification and then ur interviews would start in sept 2009 and then you can enter the match of march 2010. and plus if you are ECFMG ceritified..that gives a boost to the number of ivs you get...so its best if you get the certification before or atleast during ur interview season

but i remember i've bumped into many university programs that officially required step 1 only...so i believe everything else is an extra...i know chances might not be thaaaat good but at least i wanna know am i allowed to participate in the match??

Yes you can. I had the same doubt.. and the answer was yes. you just need to have completed the exam requirements of ECFMG by Feb last week...but you must have the degree before the July 1 start date.
which visa you intend to go on?

But Dr Shvetasm is also right.
With a pending ECFMG certificate, chances of match will be reduced to, to some extent atleast...

thanks akshat...that was a relief to tell u the truth...i will have my degree then....i intend to go on J-1 (is there any other alternative?)....and akshat did u actually apply the same way...can u tell me about your experience or however u can enlighten me....every additional info will sure help....thanks again man...will be waiting for ur post.......and thank u Dr Shvetasm for ur input....at least we have somebody sharing their experiences with us...cheers

the step 1 only requirement (for application) is valid basicly only for american students. Trust me, if you want high chances for interview invitations, you need step1, step 2 ck & cs and preferably also ECFMG certificate ready in your hand. If you are applying for H1 visa, early step 3 score would be also of great advantage. You have to be ECFMG certified by the time of match, so if you graduate in June 2009 I doubt you can participate in the Match 2009 which is in March. Why bother spending sooo much money (match is expensive!) if you cannot match for sure because you won't be ecfmg certified. Save your money for the 2010 race, make sure you have all steps under your belt by then and you would have increased your chances to the max. That's my advice.

Ok maybe i wasnt clear in my previous posts, there was a lot of information in there so it was bound to be confusing. Everyone, Shafic wants to know if he can participate in the Match to be held in March 2009 when he is expected to recieve his degree in June 2009. As i understand the system, u HAVE TO BE ECFMG certified to participate in the match and be ranked..which means by Feb 2009. and for that u have to not only have ur degree with you but have it verfied by ECFMG and ur med school which can be around 2 months after u get and submit your degree...so u would have it verified by August end 2009 at best...! What Akshat is trying to suggest is that you can go for interviews with just your step 1 score which i never disagreed with...but to make use of those interviews you have to be eligible for the match and be ranked...
