Kaplan Qbank USMLE

The materials you are using are too much for step 1. You are not studying for your masters. If you dont want to spend a lot of money you can download the review books from other websites. They are all there. You have to get a behavioral science review book. Otherwise it will effect your score a lot.

Very nice topic praying4a99. Lets see what do I have here...

Planned date: Aug-Sep

Goal: 99/250
Where am I at: Done with my first read of Kaplan Notes, starting First Aid.

Books:
· First Aid for Step 1 (2007)
· Kaplan Notes (2007) - all
· Pathology: Kaplan Notes + BRS

Q banks:
1. Kaplan Q Book
2. Kaplan Q Bank
3. NBME
4. USMLE web CD sample

Multimedia:
· Goljan 37 hours audio
· Goljan RR: Anat., BS, Biochem., Histology, Microb., Pharma
· Goljan pathology slides
· Some Kaplan videos

Plan:
1. do FA with some tests in the breaks; do USMLE self-assistment
2. start Kaplan for 2-nd read with Q Book
3. at the end: do Kaplan Step 1 QBank
4. Goljan RR
5. NBME - patch where it needs to

Good luck everyone smiling face .

Seems like a good plan, but why not use the NBMEs as assesments?

Maybe you are right...
the plan can be re-arranged in the following way:

Plan:
1. do FA with some tests in the breaks; at the end: do NBME self-assesment
2. do Kaplan - 2-nd read with Q Book; at the end: do USMLE self-assesment
3. Goljan RR, slides, HY; in between: do Kaplan Step 1 QBank (2000+ qs)
4. USMLE World - test
5. go, go, go

mhm, looks better to me raised eyebrow

Hi, I'm going to formulate a study plan but I've been doing it for a long time with no success
The problem that I came across is that I could not decide on my reading materials sad

Can you give me some suggestions whether you think these materials are enough for a nice score?

BIOCHEMISTRY: KAPLAN LN
ANATOMY: HY
EMBRYOLOGY: HY
NEUROANATOMY: HY

MICROBIOLOGY/IMMUNOLOGY: KAPLAN LN

BIOSTATISTICS: HY (I wonder whether Biostats is tested? I dun see ppl talk abt it?)
BEHAVIORAL SCIENCE: KAPLAN LN

PHYSIOLOGY: KAPLAN LN
PATHOLOGY: GOLJAN RR + GOLJAN AUDIO
PHARMACOLOGY: KAPLAN LN

And I wonder where these topics are covered:
Genetics, Molecular and Cell Biology, Nutrition, Histology, CT/MRI ?

I also plan to use FA, Qbook, Qbank, USMLE, NBME but I'll have to decide on the books first...
-------------
I planned to prepare for the test mainly relying on KAPLAN LN but then I saw another post in the forum saying "KAPLAN is not enuf" and so I am worried.

I don't have Kaplan video is it okay to skip them?

Ive heard BRS is better than KAPLAN in a few subjects, which subjects do you recommend BRS over KAPLAN LN?

Thank you a lot! Im really confused by all those lots of materials available there. disapproval

There is no one recipe for success. Many people do well on the exam using different materials.

Regarding your questions, Histology is covered in Kaplan anatomy; Genetics and Mol. Biology are covered in Kaplan Biochemistry. Nutrition is scattered in several books. CTs and MRIs you can find in the anatomy High Yield and Kaplan books.

I recommend UW questions over Kaplan Q bank questions.

BRS pathology, physiology, and behavioral science are excellent books. But it is up to you to choose among them.

Embryology and biostatistics are not worth reading whole books on them unless you are really motivated.

In the preface of each Kaplan LN it states that these books (the lecture notes) are to be used side by side with the videos. If you find your self doing fine without them keep on going but if you feel that you don’t know what the hell they are talking about you should consider watching them.

Agree with praying4a99, Kaplan Notes without the Video Lectures are completely useless (my opinion). On the Video Lectures you will see all the small details and explanatons which are missing in the Notes and which will make the picture more understandeable and logical. That is why the Notes by themselves are like 35 % from all Kaplan materials. Another 35% for the video and the rest 30% for Qbook, QBank. Imagine what will looke the Notes with all the blank spaces filled... did you got the picture... thet will happen after the Video.

For Pathology I heard more positive comments for BRS, so I switch to BRS Review, instead of Goljan Review ($30 on Amazon.com).

UW questions could be good for the last check-up, like a week before the exam (again, my opinion).

Good luck everyone smiling face

  #33

Thanks praying4a99 and miki75 for your advice smiling face Since I don't have KaplanVideo maybe I shall switch to non-kaplan materials like BRS. I shall choose materials that suit my way studying and stick with it then!

btw since i'll do anatomy/neuroanat w/ HY. Is it worth reading the whole book of HY Histology too? It's like 200+ pages... thanks! smiling face

Hai everyone here in forum
yes KLN useless without vdos. For a guy like me who works fulltime, dunno whther I will time for vdos, other highly rated books in 1st aid are the best, if u r new grad and have time then go for it as you also needs extra clinical acumen kaplan gives without going through experience, thts the beauty of kaplan.
But even then i plan to watch their vdos with non kaplan books topic by topic.
Evry one planing here for aug.sep.oct triad. Me opting for dec, iguess ecfmg will distribute 99 in this triad. God, then i will be gifted some 95+ left marks as per my target. Hahahahaa
No no friends, coming back to forum again & again refreshes mind and reinforces targets within myself atleast.
Good luck all.

HI all, I am adding my study plan to keep me motivated
Exam date: July
Goal: 99
Books:
Physio: kaplan and Costanzo BRS
Path: RR+audios
Micro: Kaplan and MMR
Biochem/gentics: Kaplan
Anatomy: Kaplan
Behavioral: Kaplan
Pharm: Kaplan
FA as a final review
Question sources:
UW
Kaplan Q bank
and pretest series
I plan to take NBME2 and UW simulated exam at the end of may to asses my progress
Where I am at now:
I started studying may1st, Iam mid way thorough RR for patho ( haven't listen to the audios yet) and I am mid way through physio kaplan ( haven't done costanzo yet).

  #44

Nice going Cheech, but honestly there is no need to read Kaplan and BRS physio nor MRS and Kaplan micro ... you will waste your valuble time like this ... you can stick to either One ... I think one book for each subject is enough ... same applies to Pretest series, they are good for school courses not now before such an exam, they are a bit too basic, there are better alternatives out there, you can use that time mastering UW ...

GL mate smiling face

Praying4a99,
thanx for the advice, its much appreciated. For physio I guess I will stick to kaplan then since Iam mid-way through. For micro, which book do u suggest?.
thanx

  #46

I am positive you only need one book for each subject, but which book? that is up to you. I already listed the books that I am using in the first post ... those are My Personal preferences. I do not guarantee that they would work, but I sure hope they do! grin

Hi Fatima,

You plan on sitting for the exam in Oct-Nov and you are already done with your first read? Well done!

As I said earlier and as mentioned in First Aid and Kaplan Q book, try to stick with one good, well rated, and highly recommended review book for each subject. There is no need to over do it.

You just need one review book for each subject. In case you need to look something up, you can use your text books or you can look it up on the internet. And you need a book that covers the most essential facts (the so called high yields) this is where First Aid for Step 1 comes handy.

You said you are not sure when to use the NBME assessment exams. Simple, when you are done with your first read, take NBME 1. When you are done with your second read, take NBME 2, and so on. These assessment exams help you recognize your points of weakness so you can work harder on them in your up coming read.

Regarding question banks make sure you do USMLE World, when you are done with it, you can read, use, experiment with any other question bank you like.

GL with your prep smiling face

Guys, does anybody preparing with Home study (Kaplan Review books)?
I see, everybody write about Kaplan Lecure Notes. But if the Kaplan Lecture Notes without video not/less
effective ,for example, Ihave no time to listen DVD, Instead than,
to read more comprehensive Home Study Books is the Best choice?
What's your opinion?
