Hi, this is a peculiar question... please refer me to a case you may know about, does somebody know if a candidate with disability has ever got into residency? I have problems with my hips (mostly painful walking) which could be solved with proper surgery (THR or BHR or BMHR - not sure what exactly). But, is there a chance that in case I do not make surgery to be looked upon favorably for residency? This is a big issue in my medical career life now, because I am so keen to go and work in America. I am almost 35. Thanks,

ok let me get this straight. Cos i think i have misunderstood something here. Are you thinking to go ahead with the surgery so that you get cured from the Disability you and then apply for Residency so that you application though maybe having a disability clause but very workable. Or You are not going with the surgery cos you think that by having the disability you will have increased chances of matching cos you have a disability. Please do clarify cos i m sort of confused here. Thank you.

Thanks for your reply. I am presently having a disability. It was not as bad when I was in Med School but with years it got worse (hip dysplasia - now hip osteoarthritis) and I am having pain walking. I am in "negotiations" to do a newer type of hip arthroplasty - BMHR (www.mcminncentre.co.uk) but waiting for the prosthesis to be available in India (because in England is too expensive) so I don't know when I will make the surgery. So, I think I can't catch the 2009 Match, and I think I have about 1.5 years to do the surgery. I am not aware of any disability clause. Could you explain this to me please? Do you know what are my options? I am IMG, so don't know what clauses might apply to me. Thanks a lot.

HI. I think the best option for you would be to contact ECFMG direct. Coz none of us here are qualified or have the info that you need. Hope you get better soon.
