Just wanted to see what others all around have done. Lately, it started seeming like many have USCE. I found that weired, because it is SOO expensive, unpractical, and takes a lot of effort and planning ahead to acheive.
And I wanted to know if programs will accept people with minimal practice and hands-on experience.

Yes, some progs inevitably will, even if their websites sound a bit uppish. Ultimately, some people with less qualifications do get in SOMEwhere. At least it's a start for them. The complexity of the Match process gets illustrated when people with loads better creds stay unmatched. So, you have to factor in things like luck, being in the right place at the right time, and contacts, contacts, contacts!

Expense, practicality, effort and planning are all subjective, p4a99. Perhaps the applicant with somewhat less scores who puts in immense efforts in other ways may match over someone with better scores who did not. Secondly, if someone's scores are not that great, they KNOW that they must do something else special to get noticed. Hence, people decide to spend big $$ for these. Also, you can get the same USCE without paying, if you know the right people i.e. contacts as I mentioned above.

Tavelling from all the way east to all the way west ... housing for a month and renting a car ... eating 3 time * 30 days and bringing back souvanirs is always expensive!

Pray, do you know how important a US residency is for some people? These are small things for a much bigger goal. It can help someone stay with their family, it can help others provide for their kids' futures, it can help others find their own futures.......One month's living expenses is not that much, when you think about it.
And, who expects you to bring back souvenirs from an Observership?

Oh, you're talking about med students? Why didn't you say so, silly!! In that case, there is not even much effort involved. Unis like Yale and Harvard literally throw electives at students. And, for enterprising students [such as yourself], the expenses is not impossible to manage.

I know that it is important but some people dont even think of coming to the states in the first place because the process is very expensive. Add to it this USCE for 1-2-3 months ... that is back-breaking to many ...
Still I heard that A LOT of indians ( it seemed like all) have USCE ... So HOW DID THEY AFFORD it?
