Hi. How does one dress appropriately for an Observership? I'm asking about female doctors.

Considering that it is for approx one month, do we wear scrubs while on the premises? Or semi-formal work clothes [smart pants and blouses?] Or formal stuff? [I can't afford that many suits!]

Thanks for any help.

ask the place where you'll be doing your o'ship. i did an externship and wore semiformal clothes--nice pants and tops. look sharp but you don't have to be formal. there were some ppl in scrubs but that's because of the nature of their schedules/duties and whatever, but i wasn't expected to wear them all the time, unless i wanted to go observe a procedure.

I agree with silver. Chances are you are going to wear the white coat over everything else, so you don't need anything fancy, just avoid the denin and open toe shoes. grin

Good for you you'll be doing an observership, paheli!

The amount of effort it takes just to land ONE Observership is tremendous, but it's well worth it!

I did not have a slightest idea about falling in love with American guy in my last year in med school, especially when I could not even speak English !!! I hated them just for saying '' I love you '' every minute, now look at me: I love America, love people, etc.... and saying '' I love you '' to my family every minute.

If I would know, I would study English, study more in school, did obserwship, do anything just made it easier to become MD in US.

In my med school, we would have pretty intense clinical exposure on a daily basis, right from after the first year. But, they do not give LoRs for that obviously. We were also allowed to do some surgeries on our own, with the Chief sitting in the OR, all scrubbed up. Things like Caesarian sections, hydroceles, appendectomies etc, the more eager ones among us were comfortable with before we finished med school. Now, that's what I call really Hands-on. But, now I can only brag, and who'll believe?

Yes, in my home country during the summer brake we had mandatory electives in hospital.

Paheli, I could not count, speak well, she/he was same to me... when I did sightseeing tour around the Prague for my future husband, I said '' this is love university, instead law''. He gave me this look, like what ? grin

I could go on forever, it was very funny and romantic... I took Russian ( yes, communist country ) and German in school, never had English.... Really, thinking now , have no idea how I got into this marriage ! Now it is very blessed, funny, happy, most caring marriage.

Still I wish I could be better in spelling( thank God for spell check ) , or expressing myself.......

I was told to be aware of Indians because it seems that All of them have USCE wink

Anything else you did during summer? other than mandatory rotations?

Thanks paheli.

Praying, in my school, we did not have hand's on experience in such extend as Paheli, it was more like shadowing style, only during the last semester on the end, it got better, but it was only internal medicine. In surgery only observing , holding, assisting...... minor procedures .

sad

So, mostly, you will match with not that much of experience other than what you learned at school and you will not have that great of talent at procedures, if any, too?

On the end, praying4a99, now when you are still a med student , get the best out of this status! All the advantages it brings ..... as you see , I missed that opportunity, mainly bc I was not planning come to the US.

I babysat during my vacations. Needed the money...

But I got two years of hospital rotation during the medical school, very intense.

And I studied English for 11 years, because my godmother paid the courses for me, that was great!

Sorry, p4a99, I meant No to the Harvard electives/clerkships etc. Many of do have a lot of experience, per se. Just not what the US will approve of/accept/prefers. That's the sad part. It just disqualifies all of your efforts and enthusiasm during your med school years, in a simple stroke.
