Which is the more important risk factor for osteoporosis, age or gender. The answer on usmleworld says age, but gender is not an option and the description says how women are more prone to get osteoporosis than men.

I would still say age... Think of women at 30 and 70 years... Gender is the same but age is different... But, in women age and gender have additive affect on loss of bone mass... In both genders OP is prevented by weight-bearing exercise + Ca-rich diet... Look here: http://www.nof.org/prevention/risk.htm Age is listed first but is not favored over gender... Or here: http://courses.washington.edu/bonephys/oprisk.htm... Cited: "...AGE, GENDER, and RACE are important risk factors for osteoporotic fractures. Men and women who have the same bone density have about the same risk of a fracture, but overall women have more fractures because they have lower bone density. Persons of African ancestry have better bone density than other races; furthermore, at the same bone density they have about 30% fewer fractures (Cauley). Asians have fewer fractures than Caucasians even though their bone density is lower..."
