I hope I am not in the wrong spot but I wanted to ask...What do you guys think about the companies that protect or monitor our credit let say equifax, lifelock...Are they safe to use or worth to pay.
I am IMG living in USA and one my friends told me that someone else asked for a credit card using his personal info...
Thanks for your opinion

No one living in US and scared about identity theft...We give personal information to a lot of companies including SSN for buying a new car, credit cards, loans, leases...
I guess no one cares about this...Just drop a line if you live in US have a SSN and credit cards, maybe your answer is that you are not worry about it...
Input please

Identity theft is a real problem and everyone living here is concerned about it. You need to guard all your personal information with your life. Yes, we do give out our personal info a in our everyday life, but if this info ends up in the wrong hands it can wreak havoc.

I personally know people who have had their identities stolen. My advice is, get a shredder and shred all your mail. Especially the credit card offers. Anyone can dig through your trash and apply for a credit card in your name. If your mailbox does not have a lock then check your mail everyday. Do not leave it lying in the mailbox for days. Also don't leave your wallet lying around at work. One of my friend is an RN. A patient's mom stole her personal information from her purse when she stepped outside her office for a minute and stole her identity. Another one of my corworkers had her identity stolen by a meth addict who broke into her garage and opened up a meth lab after getting a credit card in her name. These are true stories. I'm not making this up.

Watch your back every second. I personally follow all these rules. You can call me paranoid if you want.

Thanks cartman, very nice tips. i agree with you about taking universal precautions...
What do you think about these companies that warn you everytime you apply for a new credit card to confirm it is yourself the one that is applying. I suscribed my self for a 30 days free trial with lifelock but in the membership they asked me for SSN then i didn't give it to them because i was freak out, so what do you think about this third party companies that will watch out for you or they are just a waste of money or even worst dangerous.

anytime you apply for a credit card, you will be asked your SSN and some other personal info like your address, date of birth etc. you will have to answer these questions in order to get your credit card application approved. just make sure you are applying for a card with a genuine reputable company.

the third party party that watch out for you........its upto you. i have a couple of credit cards and i'm not a member of any third party nor have i opted for privacy protection for any of my credit cards. it cost too much and i don't have the money for it. i just watch my own back and try and protect my personal info.

we goto the point of taking all personal letters, bank statements, credit card offers, anything & everything with a our name or birthdate & esp. SSN n' burn them because I've even heard sometimes thieves can take the shreds n' piece it together...
Identity theft has become a real scare & what's worse once it'd done it take years to undue & most of the times it can't be even undone...if you see the Montel show or the news, people who have their identity stolen, most of them don't even get out of the fix...

what's scary is now you hear about companies/banks etc. that have your information on paper are trashing all your valuable info w/o caring to even shred them...so you can't even protect yourself from that, it's all a third party's doing...in AZ it came out that a huge morgage company that closed down threw boxes & boxes of papers all filled w/ personal info of the people they lent money to....can you imagine what an identity thief would do w/ that?

when I have the money I will for sure pay for those credit monitoring services...right now it's not a possibility
