Hypo... in this case, pt would not be able to take good breath due to pain. May be in other cases of pain hyperventilation can be present...but ribs fx...I think hypo

When you have a broken rib, you breathe shallow. It hurts to take a deep breath, cough or sneeze. You don't want to know how I know this.

nod Yup, been there, done that. Took meds for pain. It was worse than the gallstones that I had......It's not often that I can answer a clinical question here. Glad to help.

Jazmil - I wasn't playing soccer or beating residents, but I did see a resident in the ER. THAT'S how bad it hurts.

Yes pain is the biggest factor which leads to hyperventilation.

Rib fracture will cause patient to breath shallow because of severe pain during breathing so it will eventually lead to hypoventilation unlike regular conditions of pain.....which lead to hyperventilation....

shallow breaths has more dead space component, thus alveolar ventillation will go down. overall should hypoventilate, although the RR is high

It's hypoventilation and increased risk for pneumonia.
