is it absolutely necessary to be a student at the time of joining electives?

is it possible to apply for electives as a student and schedule it after one has finished his final year in home med school?

My answer to that you be no. You wouldn't be a student. You would be a doctor. And unlicensed doctor.

doctor_mhl:
If your med school gives you a degree/ diploma only after you complete your 'internship', then yes you are a final year medical student while u do ur 'internship'. If you get your diploma and THEN do an 'internship', no, you cant apply for electives then. you'll be a graduate already.

bbb's answer to the question of this topic is 'no'. thats what she meant.

Yes, you can do 'externship' after your graduation. Infact, you have to be a graduate to be able to do an externship

This topic was about 'electives' / clerkships which are meant for medical students and not graduates. Just read the posts on this forum and you'll know more.

Hope this helped.

Hitesh,

Would you mind telling me more about the externships. I can not find info about in Hopsitals/medical schools home page. DO you apply for it on your own or there are forms to complete ?!

and MOST IMPROTANTLY, does the application to externship require a copy of your diploma, or a formal letter from you medical school indicating that you are a graduate is enough

I am sorry angel, but I have never extensively searched for available externship positions, so I dont know a lot about them. But from what i do know i can tell you that:

1. Externships are done in a particular department or division, So it will be their websites that will have the info. Med schools will not know of externship positions.

2. the application process/ eligibility requirements and the documentation needed will vary with each program. there is no single answer to that.

3. Externships are hard to find. What you can do is a) search this forum b) check out this list c) Just check out the websites for hospitals/ universities you might wanna work at ( ie. where you might wanna get a residency spot )

4. Some may require you to be ECFMG certified. Some may want you to buy your own malpractice insurance.

5. Visa is another issue. It can not be a B visa. Will not be H1b either. So, it either will be a J visa or F1 ( not sure about this).

That's all I can tell you from the top of my head, if i remember / find out more, i'll post it here.
