I had quite some problems with gmail, thought its worth while sharing it here. First - I got an interview invitation from one of the program and I did not receive it. I came to know that I was invited for iv bcoz my friend is in that program. Not all programs send invitations through ERAS, some of them send it directly to ur email. after I contacted the program co-ordinator she sent me some dates for iv then again I did not receive the confirmation email. Second- My lawyer sent an email listing all the things needed to file H1-B visa and I did not receive it as well, my program called me bcoz I did not respond to the email from the lawyer. Third- My travel agent forwarded my itenary after booking flight tickets, guess what I did not receive that too. I have been checking even junk mail, but no clue of the above emails which I missed. Not sure if somebody else experienced the same problem. My advise - dont use gmail, probably is anti-spam filter is too powerful.

A spam filter can only redirect your mail in to a different folder, it cannot prevent any mail from getting in to your account. Only a mistyped email ID can do that. So, what do you guys suggest needs to be done differently?

I prefer Gmail over yahoo and stupid hotmail. Anyway, yes, sometimes some emails are filtered unneccessarely to the spam box. What do I do about it? I check my Spam box more often.

I check each and every spam mail, what i noticed is that is i email somebody and if they reply to it, ill get it but if they send directly to my email- i did not receive those emails. I was under the impression that the spam filter can only direct the email to junk folder, but i did not receive some emails at all! strange but true. i prefer gmail over yahoo but if it costs me my future, i prefer not to use it. god knows how many iv's i missed, but no regrets, i got prematched. the reason i posted this is to caution those who will be applying for next years match.

Some emails are catagorized under each other. As if they are a discussion. Did you notice that? I'm sure that this is a huge problem for you. But if there were such a problem those high tech savvy guys would have fixed it in no time from the 10000s of complains that they would have got. I have no clue.

Guys, I switched to Inbox.com way long ago... and its been working fantastically. You get 5 Gb storage, a remote hard drive, photo album, My documents folder, a Calendar and Notepad. To me works great. Never had a problem. I have been a long time user of Hotmail, and some time Gmail. Give it a try. PS: 5 Gigabytes if you reside in the US.

Hummm... I have been using Gmail. No wonder I have not been receiving some emails from my PC. I was supposed to turn in a form to my PC on X day, but I had a doubt and called her and she told me that she sent an email with some corrections to the form and that she changed the due date to Y date. I NEVER received that email. So if I had not called her because I had a doubt, I would not had turned the form on time!!!!! I have taken werther's advise and have just opened an inbox.com email account a few minutes ago; it offers POP3 access which was why I was using Gmail. Ok, so bye bye Gmail. I wonder if I have missed any other emails my PC sent. Hummmm...

According to this article, the top 3 free email services are Gmail, inbox.com and AOL. But since Gmail is having this problem right now, I switched to inbox.com http://free-email-services-review.toptenreviews.c...

dr123 wrote: is inbox.com better than yahoo? I am not sure, I think Yahoo is good... I saw it from a friend and I think that the look and feel from Inbox is better... Give it a try, sign up and test drive it... I discovered by accident by looking at some random guy at the library checking his email... it called my attention the name of the provider, you know "inbox" sounds intuitive for an email address... and tried it out... now my two Hotmail accounts and the Gmail one... are sort of abandoned.

i think the dot thing is a good thing. for example if ur email is abc.xyz@gmail.com, emails sent to abcxyz@gmail, a.b.c.x.y.z@gmail, ab.cx.yz@gmail....etc by an error will still reach you rather then getting lost. it is like having many email IDs in one !

Actually, I prefer Gmail. You can whitelist email adresses of people you want to get an email from. Gmail also doesn't report your IP when you send an email which makes it safer.

Korotkoff, what is this 'whitelisting' you mentioned, please? Thanks. werther, it has the same sort of customizable windows, arranged in a random manner, allows you to change preferances, themes etc. I prefer iGoogle anyday. Big Gmail fan here.

Well gmail scans all your mails. If you have noticed, while reding or composing your mail, there is a column on the right side which runs adverts according to the content of you mail. THis is a major drawback.

paheli, whitelisting is like just adding the email address of interest to your address book. In Gmail, you might use spam filter.
