How much drug knowledge do we need to have? Do we need to know trade names? I mean, when taking medication history, what kind of scenarios will one encounter?

pt says the name of drug (generic or trade)

pt says he is taking some drug the name of which he doesn't remember

can it be that the pt is taking some medication but is lying because he got them on the internet or they are some herbal medicines and he is lying because his insurance will not cover it. (i am getting creative here smiling face

and that we have to recognize his chief complaints as the side effects and predict the drug (ok, i am in fantasy world now)

i haven't given step 1 or 2 but am giving CS first. so i am weak in remembering drug names - so bottom line question - do i need to remember all drug names?sad

you should know trade names of a few COMMON over the counter medications in US ....like tylenol is acetaminophin and advil is ibuprofen..SP use names like metformin and HCT in the encounters ( that i asked my brother who passed CS recently )
so you need not to learn all the trade names. As a doctor you know general classification of drugs so you would be fine.you wont be having a problem in drug section that is for sure smiling face

thanks for the reply aqua.

SP say common medicines. If you are not sure what they are talking about, ask them to spell out the name for you. They will do that very cooperatively.
