Hi there if anybody could please advice me about this matter:

Is there any advantage in waiving the right to see one's LOR?
The reason why I ask is if one has to waive this right then the covering sheet for LOR and document submission form have to be sent to ERAS by the letter writer himself/herself.In such a case the AAMC number has to be included and so the letter writer cannot post it before July.Which means the letter may get delayed(especially since it has to be sent from our home country) and may not reach in time sufficient to be uploaded by September 2008.
On the other hand if the right is not waived then the LOR's can be collected by us beforehand and submittd by us immediately after the AAMC number is available along with the document submission form.

Thanks a ton

Ok here it goes:

1.- You can send your LOR's as late as middle August and believe me... they will be ready for sept 1.

2.- You can apply later than sept 1... mark my words!! your application will remain unloaded by 99% of programs until early October!!!

3.- I would recommend to waive as many letters as you can.... they carry more weight just because programs know you did not see this letters so your LOR writer was as truthful as he/she could be, and if this person says great things about you they will be more believable because he/she did not have to say them by having the pressure of you reading them. Waived LOR's are a gamble though because they might not be as good as you might want them to be, but that's what makes them powerful if they end-up to be strong LOR's. So if you think a person can write a very strong LOR for you tell him/her that you waive your right to see them, give all the forms and ask he/she or his/her secretary to send it directly to ERAS. Only kindly ask that the sooner the better, so you are on time with the application schedule. I waived all my LOR's and I received a lot of compliments for my letters during IV's so I think it was a good move and I would recommend it if you have a gambler soul grin.

4.- When were you actually planning to send the letters?? I'm just curious hahaha... calm down you'll be alright!!!, you need to chill a little bit!! I asked all my LOR writters to send them in late July, early august and it took less than 2 weeks for them to be ready for application, they were all scanned in middle august and ready to go!! relax!!

5.- Almost forgot... your letters don't necesarily have to have your AAMC ID No., I would recommend it but it is not a must, as long as your LOR submission form includes it you'll be ok.

Best of lucks!!

Glo: seriously? Then what's the whole hullabaloo about being ready by Sep 1, and no later or you're doomed??

Thanks.

I dunno!!! I did not start that rumor... I'm actually campaigning it to brake it!!! hahaha really it is not true!! It is an urban myth just like the boogieman!!! hahaha no seriously!! I also believed it and was so OCD about it that I applied the very second that I could!! (12 am of Sept 1)... (really!!!, I'n not kiddin' about his one!! shame on me!! rolling eyes hahaha)... I checked my eras account like 3 times perday everyday to sadly find out that I'm not kidding again 99% of programs did not download my application until early, middle or even late october... and there were a lot that even waited until after the release of MSPE in early november!! this is not a joke!!

I would recommend to relax!! Don't expect anything to happen in september.... the real game starts in October... but if you have OCD like me and you want to apply midnight Sept 1 be my guest but don't say that I didn't warn you and know that you are doing it only to quiet your obsessive thoughts!!! hahahaha grin

Doomed??? No way!!! That is bullocks!! You might be "a little too late" if you apply in late november... maybe doomed if you wake up one february morning with an incredible itch to apply but otherwise NO!!! you are not doomed!!! Don't believe everything you read... I have already posted lots of things I learned during the match and one of them is precisely this one!!

hmmm....thats an interesting take...i applied on 7th sept and all my prog downloaded by a week max....my calls came in only after oct 10th (coz my CS results came out then i guess) but download the programs did do....not saying that u HAVE to apply by sept 1 or ur doomed but well just a thought ...
I did also have all my LORs waived, took some extra running around in shorter time but i agree that waived looks better...

Thanks GLO MD,mukho and Paheli. GLO you are right ,I do think I am a bit too anxious. Thanks for your advice to relax. And of course the waive the right to see the LOR is the best thing as you say. Thanks a ton again

make sure they are signed in BLUE ink. I'd say to send them out by early august to be safe. and yes, waived mean more, especially in competitive programs, but make sure you are confident that they will say mostly good things about you.

Well, my opinion on the original question is little different. I did not match last year and I waived my rights to LORs. Despite reasonably good credentials, I only got 4 IVs and wondered many times whether something was wrong with my LORs (even though I knew my writers well - paranoid IMG I guess!).

Ultimately I ended up not matching and for scramble I reluctantly tracked down my LOR writers and asked for a copy. They were more than happy to send a copy and I was relieved to read them. Realized my problem was something else like applying only in IM, old IMG, late application ect. But I would have saved the worry and the trouble for scramble if I did not waive my rights. This time , am I going to waive my rights , a BIG no!
