Transcultural Psychiatry there is a program that takes place in the summer, one of the docs I am writing a paper with mentioned it to me. The program takes place in Africa for HIV/AIDS awareness. Is it worth it going to Africa (are programs going to be impressed)? or still focus on Externship, observership, research?

are you applying to psychiatry? is this an international program? if yes, then i would do it in a heartbeat... try to get some good contacts with other american docs there - could secure you a shot at USCE when you get back! Imagine how good this looks on your CV... and your stories could really impress at interview! good luck

What I want is psychiatry but will also apply to family med. as back up. This is a program a US psychiatrist is involved in, she is into community and transcultural psychiatry. I have done a clinical rotation in US in adult psychiatry......this aspect of transcultural psychiatry is interesting and different to what I was exposed to earlier. My problem is attempts on usmle......my step 1 was horrible.......passed on 6th attempt (5 fails) So trying to figure out what will make my resume look better.... thanx for your reply cocacola

Clinical research could help a lot and if you could squeeze in the trip to Africa it would be great! I bet psychiatrists would go bananas for that one!! and like coca cola said you will have tons of cool stories to tell during IV!! a guaranteed charmer!!
