whats this??? found it in some 2008csmanual, which i have no idea where i got fromconfused

Telephone patient encounters begin like all encounters:
you will read a doorway instruction sheet that
provides specific information about the patient. As
with all patient encounters, as soon as you hear the
announcement that the encounter has begun, you may
make notes about the case on the provided blank
paper before entering the examination room.
When you enter the room, sit at the desk in front of
the telephone.
• Do not dial any numbers.
• Push the speaker button above the yellow dot
on the phone to be connected to the patient or
the patient’s caregiver.
• You will be permitted to make only one
phone call.
• Do not touch any buttons on the phone until
you are ready to end the call – touching any
buttons may disconnect you.
• To end the call on a phone case, press the
speaker button above the yellow dot.
• You will not be allowed to call back after you
end the call.

Obviously, physical examination of the patient is not
possible for telephone encounters, and will not be
required. However, for these cases, as for all others,
you will have relevant information and instructions
and will be able to take a history and ask questions.
As with other cases, you will write a patient note after
the encounter. Because no physical examination is
possible for telephone cases, leave that section of the
patient note blank.

Yes... i got a telephone case... pretty easy and straight forward... pretty much the same as the other cases...
ask as many questions as possible...
don't give any differencials... you have not examined the patient!
if it seems emergent - tell the patient to call 911 and you will meet them at the hospital...
if its non-emergent, let the patient know they must come to see you as soon as they can...

Thanks, CocaCola, that was reassuring. Do you give any treatment at all on the phone,. since you've not examined yet?

But, what will these people come up with next? Communication via satellite to a patient on Mars??!!! My nerves are fraying..........sad

actually the phone cases isn't a new thing... had my exam about a year ago...
don't give any diff dx or tx options to your patient because you didn't do a physical
exam (although i do think i wrote differencials on my patient note - can't remember)
dont be nervous - the exam isn't difficult... its about efficiency and communication... nothing to memorize... practice is really the key to passing... once you feel comfortable, you are ok...
good luck guys!

yeah even i had a telephone encounter. was cool . just ask the entire history. you get a lot of time to ask the history coz u dnt have to perform any physical examination. advice the caller to bring in the patient for physical xam so dat u can decide wats wrong with the patient.

i hate talking on the phone. in my cell phone family plan, i use may be 10 to 12 minutes talk time, and the remaining 490 minutes goes to my better half, who is better at talking on the phonesticking out tongue

  #15

But you need to prepare for that, even though you hate talking on the phone.I got a phone case too. I loved that because you saved time on doing and writing physical exams. GL.
