hi there, can anyone tell me if during the neuro exam we should do the gag reflex to test CN 9 and 10? that is, if a neuro exam is required, should i do the gag reflex to be complete or not do it to avoid discomfort? thanks.

I didn't do the gag reflex for my neuro px but had mentioned it during the exam. When I was checking the throat and having small chat with px as I am doing it I had said "there is a routine test calls the gag reflex which involves sticking a tongue depressor down your throat to see if you would gag and that would indicate a normal response for one of the nerves. However, it is unlikely that you have a problem and it's pretty uncomfortable so I won't perform it now and will write it up in the workup part for our visit today if needed." So that covers that you didn't forget to do the exam as well as some points with the patient that you are taking in account the fact that they would not want to have a tongue depressor down their throat and gag 12 times in a day. Good luck on your exam if you haven't taken it. It'll be alright, don't worry. I passed even though I had no idea that the typing space was limited (there is only a certain amount of words you can type) and ran out of time trying to delete what I typed to fit other things. I was really worried about passing since I didn't get to finish my typing for a couple of cases but it was alright apparently. So it's not that hard, I think they just want to have an idea that you know what you are doing that's all Good luck.

thank you for your reply Krista. It's nice to get a response b/c i was worried about the gag reflex for my exam. I am taking it on May 2nd. Thanks for your encouraging words. I am a little worried about the exam, as i don't know how to really study for it. I'm not terribly worried about the physical exam part as i am about the written part. I am going to start going through the first aid cs and try to copy out the cases or something. Any thoughts? Thanks again, -raj

hi Raj, not a problem glad I could help. Yah, the written part can be tricky so practice writing cases from first aid as you said (i also used the same book) is a great idea. Maybe go through the cases, write yours out then after each compare it to their model write ups. If you do that I think you'll do stellar on the exam Best of luck.

yah? well i try i'm still waiting for my answer in step 3 forum ... looks like it's gonna be awhile. No, i don't have the cs book but first aid alone wasn't bad and i usually don't like first aid for anything else. I took the exam in LA, patients were very pleasant, proctors were nice, etc. Don't know much about atlanta but it should be pretty much the same. Remember to eat a good breakfast before hand, I ate on my own by chance bc I was told that there were breakfast food at the center but there was just juice and coffee, no doughnuts or anything. Lunch was alright but even if you normally don't eat breakfast make sure you have something that morning otherwise no energy for all the smiling you have to do All the best.
