A 21-year-old football player is brought to the emergency room complaining of back pain An X-ray shows a fractured 12th rib on the left side. Which of the following structures is most likey to be lacerated by the broken rib?

spleen is covered by ribs 8, 9 and 10. these i think are called the false ribs (correct me if i am wrong)

Rib 12 is a floating rib.

spleen is the only closest lying organ...although you are right that spleen is covered by 8.9 and 10th rib....

OK how about the left kidney? do you think it can be involved if the fractured 12 rib impinges into it.

Here is info that I find in Kaplan notes:

Left kidney contacts the diaphragm; psoas major,quadratus lumborum and the 11th and 12th rib.

Right kidney contacts the diaphragm; psoas major,quadratus lumborum and 12th rib.

Yup Spleen could be the answer if they said the 11th rib was involved.

yes, sir.

The Spleen is peritoneal organ in the upper left quadrant that is related to the left 9th, 10th and 11th ribs. Fracture of these ribs may lacerate the spleen

left kidney coz its a little bit higher, cant be spleen its intraperitoneal located superior to it
