Wow so many to choose from but only 2-3 months to take them!

What is the general opinion on taking electives that will hep you throughout your residency OR in the future as a primary care physician.

For example, Radiology. I never took this elective as a student and I know I am weak in it. Radiology is something that always needs to be known for a residency program but once you finish, it is worthless in a primary care practice!

So would you consider taking such an elective?!

I was thinking of just the big three...cards, GI, pulmonary my first year...especially since I am interested in a GI fellowship possibly.

If you are interested in something as a fellowship - take that elective late in your first year or early in your second (preferred).

Why?! So that I will be smarter when I take it?! I was actually thinking of doing GI first AND second year.

What about a research elective? Earlier is better?

Many programs you CAN'T repeat a rotation - after all the residency is in place to make Internists, not subspecialists.

My reasoning is that if you take and elective in your first year - especially early - you might not be as strong of a resident as you think that you are. Wait until you know the hospital, the attendings a little better, and have a better feel for your abilities, etc.

I'll be starting my elective (ICU) in a couple of days in the United States. I am an international medical student. Any advices?

I did ICU as an elective as a student. I suggest knowing how to read a chest XRAY and learning anything you can about mechanical ventilation!
