hey now, '30 is the new 20' i had same probs during these stupid exams, and really all i'e learned, just go do the workout, do the 30 mins or cardio (i like to do 1 hr) and it's actually destressing, as much as it sounds like tiring and such.. this way i still eat my junk i do regardless since i'm under stress, and i work out so it's neutralized.. then i dont feel so bad, plus i know i can focus more upon completion of these exams!

I have similar problem. I gained 10 pounds after starting USMLE preparation. I always gain weight when I prepare exams, any exam. I have to eat well to make sure that I can concentrate on study. Because the test season is nearly finished for me and I need get ready for the interviews, I started my plan to lose weight. There is no secret to lose weight, mainly about diet and exercise. So far, I get ride of those 10 pounds I got during the last few years. Now I still carry on to lose more weight that I got during my pregnancy. My tip is not eating any greasy food for the dinner, but leaving them for the breakfast. I still eat lots of cookies, pies, and meat, but in the morning not in the evening. Salad, milk, yogurt, and boiled egg, all healthy food are OK for dinner and exercise half hour a day. In this way, you definitely can lose weight like me.

antidepressant wrote:i typed a lot, and pressed a backspace, all gone In last five months i gained 5 kg, i have to loose it soon. its not because i am on eating binge, because i just sit on chair and do nothing. When i use to go to gym, my favourite exercise was walking/running on treadmill, but now i cant, so i have some exercise dvd, ideal 30 minutes, someday i even do nothing or 10 or 20 minute. I know even i say its time wasting, but the time i waste in whole day, i can easily exercise for 5 days in that time. Thank God, i dont eat chocolate anymore, please stay away from icecream and chocolate. Eat something light, like cereals, or puffed rice (if you know what is that), eat less at night, have dinner 4 hours before you go to bed. I read somewhere, our brain cant differentiate between hunger and thirst, so, sometime drink something to check, if it was real call. you can fill up a glass with orange juice or grapefruit juice, or any other juice you like and keep on the table and sip in between. Instead of greasy food consider light stuff, whtie meat, turkey sandwich, tuna, garbanzo beans( those cans of garbanzo beans are so filling). eat soup, eat less rice, eat pitta bread, if you are a rice eater (like me). nothing can beat exercise, if you are close to test day, like before 2 months, you can avoid, but loose the weight after you are done with exam. if everything is boring, play some music and dance with it, 20 minutes, . after age of 30, our metabolism slows down, you need to get some stress hormone going, "VERB", i read, even if you eat normal, you can gain 10 pounds every year, when you get older than 30, if your physical activity is zero. loosing weight cant be tough, nothing can be tougher than usmle AD......thanks for the nice tips...i totally agree about the thirst and hunger theory u have explained i have actually experienced it myself quite a few times! what are garbanzo beans though?? never saw those but wud like to and hey buddy usmle is though no doubt but its not impossible....and the more u study for it ,the better ull feel after its OVER best of luck!!

thanks myeloma, you will get it in can in walmart, as garbanzo beans or chickpeas. you dont have to soak it, just heat it up, add some salt and black pepper, you can add some onions too, or green pepper, and stomach filling food. by the way, if anyone want to cut down calories from sugar, you can use splenda, in coffee or tea, its little more expensive than normal sugar, but you dont use much sugar in tea/coffee anyway. and its harmless than other artificial stuffs.

Been there, done that... My advice: execise, exercise, exercise, it is time to indulge yourself because usmle is a great effort, so do cut on the calories-not too much-, but try to burn, because it is a time to indulge...At least that is the way I see it. Use other derivatives for stress instead of food like listening to good music, watch a good comedy movie, have a walk with a friend or just have a nap in the afternoon or a manucure.

Arlete, have u tried Alli? I lost my weight while on Alli but I would say it had a very little to do w/ my weight loss, it was all walking....n' I will NEVER try it again... I have the most horrid, yet hilarious stories about myself on Alli...I was on crunch time to lose weight n' I happened to be staying at someone else's house when I was using Alli...I'll tell you Arlete, I used 2-3 bottles of air freshener over a week period., the most horrendous stink I used to let out..ugh.....n' I always had to make sure I had to flush 3-4 times!! I had the hardest time going anywhere coz when I had to go....I had to go!! I made sure I always had an extra pair of undies coz you don't even realize if you're leaking..., I remember one time that happened n' I only realized something happened coz I kept smelling "the stink" n' next thing I noticed, the "stink" was following wherever I was going....I realized then, it was me!!....talk about my grossest experience in life ever....

Come on, paheli, you're a doctor! Don't read the next lines, then! toolazy: I think I wouldn't have those kind of problems even if I ingested S. aureus in the mayo! So, for me, it took care of two problems at the same time: I am working like a clock and loosing weight/keeping it off. I go to the gym 3 hours a week, though.

Arlete, we aren't being doctors on this thread in a pure sense of the word. Plus, I didn't know what I was reading......until I read it!

Excelent thread! I also gained almost 30 pounds while stuying for the steps. Chocolate and Ice cream were my fuel to get through the exams prep. It was too hard to focus and concentrate while being hungry or just eating fruits/veg. I tried to eat more fruits and vegetables, but 30 mins later I felt hungrier than ever, and I could only keep on studying by indulging myself with chocs and ice creams. I didn't have much time or energy to exercise, either. And when I did exercise, I came back home hungrier, tired and sleepy, with no energy left to keep on studying. Even if I exercised in the morning, when I came back to my studies, I fell asleep on the books! Now that I'm done with the exams, I'm eating much less. I am no longer craving for chocolates and icecreams and I'm eating healthier, I guess. I've lost 7 pounds already in a couple of weeks, just by not eating as much as I used to. Also, I started to go for a long walk 3-4 times a week. For those who can do it, exercise a little (just a little, not too much so that you don't feel sleepy when studying), drink liquids and always have fruit/vegetables at hand to substitute for high-calories food when craving for them... This way, you might just gain 10 instead of 30 pounds, if you're still needing icecreams or chocolate.

paheli.. I see... The problem was being caught by surprise...!!! beiwen: I wouldn't risk it! Before you learn how your body reacts and what diet you have to be on, you should better stay home!
