I was wondering how many of you people face this problem...whenever an exam comes I start munching on my favorite chocolates, icecream or anything and gain weight....I start preping from Step 1 two weeks ago and have already gained 4 pounds!!! Is anybody in the same boat as me.....Now I know all that stuff about exercise and how to lose weight but I just don't have the energy to put in the extra effort. I am not overweight and actually have a fit body . However I do not want to start gaining this extra weight...How do you people manage to keep yourself fit during exam preps? Don't you feel tired and drained and aged preping for these tests? Whats everyone doing to keep themselves normal? Lets discuss.

royaldoc99 sorry i cant help u here. as I felt anything except normal all these days of preps I think feeling so abnormal is normal in prep of these stressful exams
anyways what I followed was I voluntarily avoid thinking about it. As it used to disturb me & frustarte me even more. So I decided finally to take one thing at a time. exams first n everything became secondary

It happened to me also..when I started for prep i gained weight..but to me it doesn't matter now..result is the only thing that matters to me..You can alsways loose all ur extra fats after exam..go to gym..and u wud be perfect...but for now eat and read and be halthy ..rather than thinking abt wt gain..

i thnk munching on healthy food evry 2 hrs or so is the key to avoid weight gain for example having a chewy granuola bar full of fiber and energy wid nuts and fruits instead of chocolate (though being a choclate fan myself i know thr is no substitute for it )and to eat a bunch of sweet juicy grapes or any other fruit instead of icecream can help avoid those xtra pounds.atleast thats wat i do.lets c wat others might suggest. good luck to all in staying slim and acing steps!

Hahaha, this is thread is dripping with reality! So true. Well, I walk/jog ~4km each morning, I've been more regular since I got done with Step 1. The pounds are falling off. Funny thing is I can't walk if I don't have my car, coz last week, it was in the garage, and guess who slept in each morning! Yeah, healthy eating is key, but if you're home all day, your hands are bound to find their way to the Junk Food Jars, rather than the fruit basket. And, you only feel guilty the first time, and then you're ok! Good luck to everyone in this endeavor, ALMOST as hard as the USMLEs!

when ever u feel the need to eat something....try drinking a glass of water or two. it actually helps in reducing the amount of food u put in ur stomach.mayb it dilutes the gastric acid in stomach which im not sure is the sole reason for hunger pangs but iv always thought it to be. the water will also flush out toxins u accumulate sitting on ur butt doing nothing but munching and studying all day...will make u pee more and u will have to get out of ur chair and move those flaby legs to the washroom(unvoluntary excercise, preventing DVT ) and lastly if none of the above happens..atleast u,ll have nice glowy fresh skin at the end of the day due to so much water intake! P.S : try to drink water which is at room temperature.

hi, well, I don't think I had this problem, I guess the key is the exercise, if you keep doing exercise - anything: aerobic/anaerobic -, you won't gain weight, of course you have to be careful with your diet as well. I have always jogged and played a couple of sports so, that made the trick. However, now that I started the residency, I have gained like 6 kg at least, so BE CAREFUL GUYS, if you gained several pounds during your prep for usmle, STOP it because during residency you might gain more and more

I don't exercise at all. I consider it waste of precious energy and time.(this theory is only for me. As your doctor, I strongly recommend exercise atleast 30min and min 3 days a week) So when I study, I usually have a very sedentary lifestyle. I eat all kind of necessary food e.g 6 cups coffee, 1 hot choclate, fried chicken, a bag of buttery pop corn (while watching DVD lectures) and ofcourse regular greasy spicy meals in between. What I think is when i will start residency, I will lose weight due to all that running around which i dont do now. Thats why I am eating and I was HAPPYYY. BUt now Chemamr got me confused...why do you gain weight during residency?

I have to agree with Jack. I just got done with my internship in January and was perfectly fit then....flat tummy etc....I used to run around a lot at the hospital. But now its an extremely sedentary lifestyle and i have gained 6 lbs so far!!! I did ride on my step machine for 30 minutes 3 days ago to reenergisemyself but it was of no use!! The weight gain continues. So now its all diet for me. I munch on healthy stuff like oranges, cucumbers, carrots, cabbage, tomatoes etc. But at the end of the day when my mouth is sore with green veges...I can't help digging into that icecream box in my freezer!!!! Its pathetic but what else can we do....We HAVE to get that 99. I know one thing hoewever...that i do lose the weight when i start running around. I would however hate to start my residency as a fat ugly couch potato!!!

yes guys, residency can be very time demanding. That means, less time to sleep, less time to exercise, enough time to eat whatever you can = sedentary life , jeje. take care...

chemamr wrote: yes guys, residency can be very time demanding. That means, less time to sleep, less time to exercise, enough time to eat whatever you can = sedentary life , jeje. take care... Thats RIGHT... While I did my medical school rotations, I saw on the notice board there was a paper with all the residents pictures and names so we would know who everyone is. What I noticed is that those pictures were taken at the beginning of their first year. Almost ALL of them (I would say 90%) had gained at least 20 pounds, and some were considerably heavier in person (around the end of first year) compared to their pictures at the beginning of that year. In residency they DO make you run around a lot, and you are under a lot of stress, but poor sleep, lack of exercise, and eating at strange hours, whenever you can, and having the food in the cafeteria which is not the best at some hospitals can lead to considerable weight gain just in ONE year! P.S. I'm not making any public comments on my weight!

i typed a lot, and pressed a backspace, all gone In last five months i gained 5 kg, i have to loose it soon. its not because i am on eating binge, because i just sit on chair and do nothing. When i use to go to gym, my favourite exercise was walking/running on treadmill, but now i cant, so i have some exercise dvd, ideal 30 minutes, someday i even do nothing or 10 or 20 minute. I know even i say its time wasting, but the time i waste in whole day, i can easily exercise for 5 days in that time. Thank God, i dont eat chocolate anymore, please stay away from icecream and chocolate. Eat something light, like cereals, or puffed rice (if you know what is that), eat less at night, have dinner 4 hours before you go to bed. I read somewhere, our brain cant differentiate between hunger and thirst, so, sometime drink something to check, if it was real call. you can fill up a glass with orange juice or grapefruit juice, or any other juice you like and keep on the table and sip in between. Instead of greasy food consider light stuff, whtie meat, turkey sandwich, tuna, garbanzo beans( those cans of garbanzo beans are so filling). eat soup, eat less rice, eat pitta bread, if you are a rice eater (like me). nothing can beat exercise, if you are close to test day, like before 2 months, you can avoid, but loose the weight after you are done with exam. if everything is boring, play some music and dance with it, 20 minutes, . after age of 30, our metabolism slows down, you need to get some stress hormone going, "VERB", i read, even if you eat normal, you can gain 10 pounds every year, when you get older than 30, if your physical activity is zero. loosing weight cant be tough, nothing can be tougher than usmle

Oh NO!!! At least I didnt expect to hear this TODAY---that my metabolism is going to slow down even more! I was born on April 9th and I turn 30 TODAY! I did 60 pushups for a change today morning. Then I ate a banana and cucumber for breakfast. And now that its afternoon, hunger switched on and I just consumed a bar of cheddar cheese!!! I guess I will starve myself for the rest of the day and only drink tea if I feel hungry today. I really hate turning THIRTY. It used to feel so good to say to people that I was twenty something. I will just go bury myself in the books again.

Thanks paheli! You are so sweet. Well, I have refused my family for cake today. I didn't have cake last year too because I lived in that dreadful hostel of my med school. So, may be next year. This year is for USMLE. May be I will cook a simple meal tonite. Things have been going pretty slow today....I don't know why. Didn't get much studying done today. Some relatives are going to drop by today evening probably. So, today's time has really gone waste. Thanks a lot for your wishes. Go eat a delicious chocolate cake for me.....in the name of my day.

Thanks myeloma. I dont look 30....I actually look better than I did in my twenties....TOUCHWOOD! My new ten year resolution is to watch my weight. Double the exercise once these exams are over. Its going to be hard road. Yup we arent having any cake this year. I am on a "SEE FOOD" diet ! My mom however said that she will get a cake no matter what since I am home this year after that 5 year nightmare I went through at med school! But I have told her not to put candles on it ....except one big fat candle with numbers on it! Oh and I am going to be serving cake but not eating it You all are welcome to join us.
