Kaplan Qbank USMLE

Hi
I havent written any detailed guide for step3 preparation as i was busy in my interviews. Now its too long to actually write any decent one. But i am still being asked by friends. So i collected all my small posts i made for step3 for a friend but then i though i should post them here too. So here it goes.

Here are my suggestions:

USMLE WORLD: basic source for the preparation. do it good, do it twice
Step2 notes: probably can skip them, not high yield, if you really dont remember anything then sure otherwise first do first aid for step3 and then decide. (i would skip it)
First aid 3: good for revision, and some say excellent for passing score.
Swanson: good for geriartics and sports medicine and may be even more if time permits.
kaplan qbook 3: i would suggest doing it once near the end of preparation.
Step123 qbank for step3: if you can get your hands on this, very high yield.
ccs: something for ccs, personal suggestion, shaher's ccs case ( google it or amazon or ebay)

Thank you so much for the advice for study materials for usmle step 3 how long
should I study.

you are welcome. The preparation time is completely individualized. I know people scoring 80 plus in 3 weeks but then i know people failing in 3 weeks. For an average person i would guess that to finish up USMLE world qbank, kaplan qbook, ccs cases and a review book should take about 3-4 weeks of full time studying and should be enough to score above 80. I don't know about how long it will take you.

hi kingsofke i am jst starting my prep for step 3 can u tell me what resources u
would advice me to use. i have about 1 month for preparation. i can put in 8 hrs
a day. i have taken step1 and 2ck within last 6 months. scores are 255 an 258.

thank you

Hi
nice of you to ask me for advice. i am sure better persons have written there suggestions in the forum already. with your scores and recent step2 i am sure you would do great. just stick to the usual. ie usmleworld, kaplan qbook and step2 notes. you can also use for some advantage, swanson review for family practice (completely or just the geriartics and sports medicine section). I would Highly suggest doing "shaheer's ccs cases" cd if you can get your hands on one. I did some unusual stuff but i think thats it.
now you can guess why i didnt made any post in step3 exam support forum for my suggestions. i dont have much to say. this is tough exam so do whatever you can and still be ready to be shocked. try doing nbme if changing date is an option.

thats all i can think of right now. let me know if you want to know anything specific. there is too much to say and i have just given general overview.

regards

Dear Friend
i want to start preparation for step 3 can u advice what books to read .

Hi
Its a tricky question. I can only tell you what i am doing and have done.
Swansons review of family practice (all units except adult medicine. I did it to review the specialities. questions are not properly written but its quite thorough review of the syllabus of specialities. geriartics and sports medicine are esp. amazing.)(needs around 20-25 days)

Kaplan lecture notes for step2ck Internal medicine (a review of familiar text, i am about a year now from my step2ck)(about 20 days)

Medstudy for boards ( truly amazing book. reminds a lot of kaplan. but is really tough and thorugh, much more stuff than kaplan and i am not sure how much of it is covered in step3 and how helpful it will be but i highly suggest to do this if you have time and stregnth to do it.)(about 2 months)

Kaplan qbank for step3 (5-7 days)
Step123 qbank for step3(5-7 days)
UW qbank for step3(14-18 days)
Kaplan Qbook for step3(3-5days)

regards

Guys, what would be considered a "good or decent" score by most
programs?...

Thanks in advance...

85 -90, based on what i have heard about different programs actually using a step3 cut off for filtering, take abington hospital for example.

I know that it would be better to have out step 3 result before the ranking
date...However, I am planning to give by the end of January or Feb. I am
sure that I cannot take the exam in December.
Given that, Should I start paying the fees and sending my application now or
can I wait for 2-3 weeks and then apply in December to get the 90 day slot
as January - march.
Your suggestions Please!!
Thanx

you cannot choose the period and it is automatically assigned. but you might like to ask from someone that what dates are available right now , which you can only check after applying. you may not have a date available in january if you apply in late december.
Apply now, your period will start if your application was processed and approved. Your period will be within 3 months + 15 days.
You can extend your period once, so totally you may take the exam with 6 months + 15 days.
You should schedule your exam early, if you cannot sit for it, cancel and reschedule like step 1+2ck free of charge if is done more than 5 days of your scheduled date.

Good luck.

I'm planning to write step 3 early next year. How can I apply step3In NJ? it
required 6 mo of PGT. I won't start residency until 2008.
and also the pre-medical college credits are confusing. Since I got those
credits in the first 2 years at the medical college in my country.
please advice, thx.

you dont need to apply to NJ, even if you work in NJ later. step3 given anywhere is valid everywhere in states. so apply for a state with the least obstacles, like connecticut. and yeah you can take it anywhere in usa.

Hi I wanted to know about people's experiences with Kaplan Step3 Simulated exam. I have searched forum but no clue. I wanted to know some score examples relating to actual exam score and similar comments.
Any idea guys???
No kaplan simulated exam dosent have any ccs software, The cd does include ccs workshop audio and ccs cases and 200 mcqs. I was wondering about the correlation of the cd score with actual exam as there is no examples in exam score thread.
I think you can find a torrent file for it. though am not sure. I got it from a friend.

I did UW mainly and read the step 3 lecture notes of Kaplan/selected chapters of swanson....i passed...and didnt do NBME/Kaplan q bank (though i had it) or Fischer questions....i didnt have enuff time actually...while i think what i did was alright, it would depend on how soon after CK ur taking the exam. when i started UW i scored early 60s and when i finished i was early 70s...an average of 68 i think...i read geriatrics and emergency & Sports medicine from there////also reffered to CMDT for some topics like herbal medicines (imp topic) and cancer screening....all the best

thanx a lot...very good work...i was wondering how come u didnt mention kaplan step 3 notes...i just started reading for step 3 yest so i'd like to know if they r that bad??

  #6

They are not bad, just insufficent. They are collection of few common cases and the discussion at the end of each case is actually copy pasted from step2 notes. I read them actually in step2ck preparation and thus didnt find them usefull enough to redo them. not even for ccs part.

oh i c...i actually started with neuro yest and found that pretty good...but what do i know...i'm very new and naive to step 3..! started yest...

I felt exact smae thing when i started studying for step3 2 weeks ago . I wondered why people don't like step 3 notes. Well they arent sufficient. If you aren't in touch with step 2, revise those instead.
