Hi to everybody, especially to those who can give detailed information. I am from Germany and it applies to Germany that there is no need for doctors to come back after residency in the US, so what if I amon J1 and residency takes 5 years but from the point of view of german government there is no need for my special skill. Can I stay or what is the outcome? What kind of visa should I apply in the first place? I am really confused and it is hard to get the right information. Thanks in advance

You will have to find an employer who will sponsor your permanent residency following your training. It's not easy, but it's not impossible.

if no need for doctors im not sure if you can even get on a j1 visa cuz supposedly the whole "purpose" of the visa if to educate foreign physicians so that they can practice in their own countries. Well I dont know but maybe you should go for h1

Thank u Rezaaa for your answer. I think u might be right. But there is another question though: On page 41 of first aid it says that there are certain circumstances in which the government waives the two year foreign residency requirement. One is that that u can obatin a "NO Objection" statement from your home government which would be possible for Germany, at least from what I have heared. So what if this could apply to me, what would it mean after the residency. Thank u so much in advance. This is the greates forum for IMGs.

I am from Spain and I had the same question, unfortunately to waive home requirement by presenting “no objection statement” is valid for all type of J-1 visas, e.g. research visa, except the ones sponsored by ECFMG. In other words, you can’t waive your 2 year HR by presenting this statement.

As far as I know the 2 year home requirement rule applies to almost all IMGs working on a J-1 (regardless if it's a residency or a fellowship). That is the reason why a lot of programs sponsor H1-B visa! When finishing a residency you will most certainly have to go home for 2 years, if you have stayed on a J-1. Unless you are willing to work in underserved regions or Veterans Hospitals for a couple of years. There may be other options, but I think you should talk to an immigration lawyer for that...

Yes, if your employer will sponsor your greencard, then yes, they can do it. I know a resident from my program on a J1 visa, he matched into a Pulm/CC fellowship at a university who was able to offer him a staff position at the university hospital with a greencard. He did not have to go home. (But what's wrong with Deutschland? Ah, one of my favorite places - the Kristkindlemarkt at Nuremburg, the castles near Fussen, the street vendors with the krepes near the Konigstrasse in Stuttgart.) Been to Berlin - last time was in 1991. Lived in Stuttgart from 1984-1987 - loved it!!! Love currywurst. Actually miss currykatsup so much that I found an on-line source to get it mailed to me. p.s. Two German ex-residents - neither returned to Germany after training. Both found fabulous jobs that would sponsor their permanent residency. Wunderbar!
